Pat Summitt has been diagnosed with dementia. She truly is warrior, and for a game maybe not so important to some, a legend, hero, and inspiration.

Article can be found here.

“I feel better just knowing what I’m dealing with,’’ she said. “And as far as I’m concerned it’s not going to keep me from living my life, not going to keep me from coaching.”

“There’s not going to be any pity party and I’ll make sure of that.”

Somewhere, Geno Auriemma is giggling with delight.

Seriously, though. Good luck to her. I'm not sure how early-onset dementia even works. I hope it can be controlled.

It is a form of Alzheimer's disease. She is what? 58 or 59? Usually Alzheimer's will manifest around the age of 65. Generally it is a slow onset condition that can be partially managed with certain medications. Sadly there is no cure, only management of symptoms. No one is certain what, exactly, causes the condition.

I am actually surprised that the media is labeling it "dementia" rather than " a form of Alzheimer's" seems a bit cruel to paint her condition in the worst light possible.

As cruel as this may sound I would not put it pass them but UConn is in the same location as ESPN. For years many have known Tennesse and UConn absolutely hate each other after the Mya Moore thing. So I could see them taking a jab, even if it is not right.

I doubt it.

Good luck to the coach. This is tough stuff.

I always wanted her to be the first woman to coach a men's team. If anyone could command their respect, she be the one.

It's on "govolsxtra.com," not ESPN. It was written by the Tennessee women's BB beatwriter.

There isn't any intent here...

Here's what ESPN has...
Tennessee Lady Vols' Pat Summitt has early onset dementia - ESPN

The 59-year-old Summitt told the newspaper she had been feeling erratic earlier this year, and plans to rely on medication and mental exercises to manage the progressive condition that could lead to Alzheimer's, which her grandmother had.

My bad I don't even know where I got ESPN from. Sometimes I hate to multi task. That is my fault.

No worries.

If you follow the link, Summitt herself uses the words "early onset dementia" as the diagnosis from the Mayo Clinic.

Media is just reporting what she said.

I don't see how dementia sounds worse than Alzheimer's. I don't think that saying someone has dementia makes them look bad either.

My grandparents were Tennessee fans because that's where my grandmother came from. Pat Summitt is Tennessee basketball. I've always loved the job she's done coaching. She certainly does command respect.

Geno and Pat have way to much respect for eachother. Nobody is happy or giggling with delight behind closed doors.

I believe that she is even younger than that. Im almost positive she is 54 (Nope she is 59). Could be wrong and Im to lazy to look it up right now.

It's very sad news. I live right near campus and when this news broke today, it was like a bomb dropped. She is Tennessee athletics. Thoughts and prayers go out to Pat and the Tennessee family as a whole.

According to her bio on UT's site she was born in 1952 which means she is 59. I had no idea she was that old. I thought she was younger than that too.

Oh I didn't mean anything by it... I wasn't trying to incite any conspiracy theories or anything. I was just interested to see her condition labeled the way it was. I was wrong to assume it was the media, my apologies.

Do not believe he is giggling but they do not like each other.

I've always admired Summit for how she has completely built Tennessee's program by herself into what it is today. She's a tough soul, that's for sure.

That's too bad. She has done a lot for women's collegiate basketball and UT. She deserves a lot of respect.

Dementia, Alzheimers, and Parkinson's disease are diseases I've dealt with everyday for several years in my line of work. I've seen first hand these diseases ruin lives. My heartfelt prayers go out to her and her family.

Amen!

Not my line of work but I've been down this long road with family and friends.
