Alot of lift maxes are now being done with conversion charts. For instance, if Romeo squats 250 lbs, 15 times it is the equivalent of maxing out at 600.

Wow, if that's the case I easily squatted 600 as a junior. It's funny because I couldn't even dead lift that much.

While I'm sure Romeo and his coach are not lying all i'm saying is that high school depth seems to be different then college level depth on the squats.

While I was a bit skeptic at first, the fact that his coach said he could squat makes me a firm believer that he indeed can squat 600. It's hard for me to believe that a coach (even at the high school level) wouldn't know how to properly squat.

I don't think that's the case at all. lol

My numbers were hypthetical in the above post but I just finished college ball a season ago and we used this method to keep from having guys with 600, 700 lbs on them at a time. We would do some warm up reps then you had to rep a weight that you could at least do 10 times, as this was where the chart started. We changed to this after my Junior season and it seemed that the numbers were slightly inflated but were still accurate.

You'd be surprised my school was to back to back state championship games for football the past two years and the members on the football team squat two to three inches above parallel. Proper squat depth from a powerlifting definition calls for breaking parallel and this appears to be what longo is teaching his lifters. This 3 inch difference may not appear to be a lot but can make a significant difference of up to 150 pounds plus.

Agree, we still had to reach parallel but didn't have to put 600+ pounds on your back. Form is the most important obviously.

Well, you can't really cheat on a hanging clean (since a hanging clean is basically "cheating" on a power clean) and 365 is every bit as impressive as the debated 600 lb. squat.

Mbeckha?

Is that you?

You dirty dog.

Welcome back.

BTW: reps are nice, and many will make parallels as you mentioned. But there is a distinct confidence and overall support problem when squatting 250lbs x 15 reps vs. 600lbs x 1rep.

Straight-up.

But I have heard this much of my mature life...

Squatting 250 15 times or whatever amount of reps he's done i think is better, in regards for muscle endurance than one squat of 600 pounds, which most high schools don't have the support staff to spot a kid trying to squat that much in the first place.

It's the horse before the cart theory bud.

A man that squats 600lbs one time can rep 250lbs, 15 reps.

Or nearly.

Most of the time, this is not a two way street.

I think people confuse the two.

More proof that 247 is the best scouting service.... they don't have an agenda as much as some of the other services, who are too proud to change their rankings too much because it's like admitting they made a mistake. Romeo is clearly a fantastic prospect because of his measurables and age... can't teach that stuff

I agree Romeo looks like a fantastic prospect but 247 hasn't ranked him. They've given out Stars and ratings but only ranked the top 247 prospects in their opinion. These kids have gone through the May Evaluation period, camps, combines, 7 ons, and the HS season has started. Is 247 playing it safe until NSD? Sounds like an agenda called playing it close to the vest so they won't have to make changes as stocks rise and fall. I hadn't given it a thought until you raised that comment.

247 is more or less Rivals, It's 90% of the guys that were part of Rivals that moved on over the last year or two.

Romeo Update:

Ardrey Kell's 23-21 win over Independence on Friday, its first victory over the perennial state power, came after a brutally physical performance from the Knights' defense, led by Romeo Okwara, a 6-foot-5, 235-pound linebacker who chose Notre Dame over North Carolina.

Despite the defensive struggles, Independence (5-1, 1-1) closed to 23-21 on Guest's pretty 19-yard pass to Austin Duke early in the fourth quarter, but Guest continually took big hits from the Knights' defense led by Okwara.

By the time he gets to ND, he'll be a slightly smaller Stephon Tuitt and probably a meaner version. [I know people are talking LB, but I have a different intuition].

His tape reminds me of Tuitt's. He can just bullrush his way through linemen. I'd like to see a nice swim move or another pass rushing technique. Looks like he could bulk up and play DE.

This kid is so good. A lot of people will forget about him if he redshirts too. I am guessing that we are going to have a lot of people saying "who in the hell is that Okwara kid?" in a couple years.

Awesome pick up.

This kid is only 17 right now too?

He looks so lanky. Once he grows into his body, he's going to be a nice DE. Our DLine is ridiculously exciting

Jarron Jones / Sheldon Day / Romeo Okwara

Can you say: Stephon Tuitt / Louis Nix / Aaron Lynch ??

It's going to be a great five years or so to watch the D-Line gentlemen.
