If Rees was playing so well wouldn't he be taking more than just a handful of first team snaps? Every report I've seen has Crist taking a large majority of the snaps.

It's tough to compare Crist and Rees when one is working primarily with the first team and the other with the second unit, which is why Rees received the majority of the first team reps today.

No. Coach Kelly said at this point he the leader for the starting DOG LB spot but it's far from settled.

This. Truth is Shembo probably rushes the passer much better than Danny... but I believe Danny covers better (from what I've heard/read at least). No matter who wins I expect a pretty sizeable platoon between the two guys.

Kelly said as much a week ago about multiple players/positions. Kelly's system works best with a lot of players playing.

I am a Danny Spond fan, and I am still incredulous over Koyak's pancake. Any further word on how young Ben is doing?

How about Troy Nklas?

Sounds like the coach is giving the rehabbing upperclassman every opportunity to show he can read progressions, make "quick" decisions, and not hit receivers in the feet.

Think about it. If one guy gets the major share of the reps and the race is neck and neck it would seem like the guy with the lesser opportunity is doing more with what he's getting.

All the fans like Crist's cannon arm but a cannon isn't a requisite in Kelly's offense. Quick reads, correct decisions, a quick release, and accurate throws make Kelly's machine hum.

Its not just Crist's cannon that people like, its his legit 6'4 thick frame, its his superior athleticism compared to Tommy even after multiple surgeries. Its the fact that obviously the talent is there considering he was a 5 star coming out of high school, and although high rankings are only a small means of measure, he had an offer list that was basically a who's who of the elite teams in college football over the last decade.

I think Tommy is a great kid and from everything I have read and heard a great teammate, but why does everybody speak about him like he is completely superior to Dayne in his reads, accuracy, and decision making? We won some games down the stretch in spite of him, not because of him. His poor decision making and inaccurate throw at crunch time cost us the Tulsa game, not to mention he threw 2 other INTs in that game as well. Grant it he shouldn't have been put in that situation at the end of that game at that time in his career, but still it was a horrible decision and worse throw. He single handedly tried to give USC the victory and was bailed out on numerous occasions by our stout defense. He played average at best against Army, but it was Army so of course we won.

In 294 pass attempts Dayne threw 7 picks last year. In only 164 attempts Tommy threw 8 in a MUCH more dumbed down version of the offense.

Dayne threw for 370 yrs and 4 Tds against MSU, and 277 yds and 2 TDs in basically a half of football against Michigan. It is that kind of potential that oozes out of Dayne and warrants people desiring him to be our starting QB.

I just fail to see why all the constant talk about how Tommy is so much more cerebral and better with his reads and accuracy than Dayne.

Tommy did an admirable job stepping in as a true frosh thrown to the wolves last year, but he is not our best option to begin that year as the starting QB this year. Ive tried so many times, but I just dont see it. Crist will be our starting QB to begin the year...bank it.

No disagreement here. I want a leader not just a game manager.
I would like to see Hendrix see PT and have EG redshirted.

Nix

I still can't get over Louis Nix. I heard he was supposed to be an immovable object and it is every bit true watching the rodeo drill. He is a true NT in a 3-4. I can't believe I'm saying this... I'm excited to see the defense play, since we haven't had one in years.

Looks like Diaco's head gear is starting to spread around. I might have to order one of these if I can find it. Also, I don't really remember hearing Riddick give too many interviews, but he seems to be a pretty bright kid and really speaks well.

If Diaco gets the defense in shape like everyone thinks; let me know if you find one because I'm wearing it 24/7.

Also here's the main points from yesterday's (8/13) media session with Kelly:

- Got some scrimmaging done, mainly to evaluate the younger guys.

- Described Prince Shembo as "strong" and a "solid, solid player".

- Troy Niklas' ability to play in space is "extraordinary".

- Staff is focusing more on Manti's individual and fundamental work than with him in the unit. Also seems really confident that Te'o will stay.

- Theo Riddick is an "extraordinary athlete". He was feeling his way through it last year.

- David Ruffer has been very consistent.

- Kyle Brindza has been great on kickoffs.

- Ben Turk has made the most progress of any of the kickers. It appears that there is no battle at punter.

- "Great" battle at LG.

- Andrew Nuss is "very valuable".

- Theo Riddick was never seriously considered for a complete transition to RB, but the staff has prepared him for the situation in which he would have to switch.

Those kids from Oil City play in a pretty competitive league.

I would go that far and say its competitive. I live 30 min north of Oil City in Erie, and the only tough team they played all year was Cathedral Prep. Oil City got smashed like 56-6. After watching Koyack though, I could tell he was the best player in the area every Friday when I saw his highlights on the news.

Well put! I, personally, am getting the vibe that maybe Kelly knows that if Dayne can really blossom this year in the offense he will be back and solid for us in 2012. I really am pushing for Dayne to do so good this season that next year Kelly can say, "We have the Andrew Luck type QB to win the BCS this year with a sprinkle of EG and Hendrix."

Cheers!

Today's "practice" video is up on und.com. If you're hoping to learn something about the team, you're going to be disappointed, but it's still a good feature anyway.

i don't know about anyone else - but i'd like to see some more hitting in the practice update videos. i like hearing about how the guys are progressing, but it gets a little boring day after day not seeing the hitting drills.

It was a horrible decision. But Rees didn't make it. Everyone seems to be forgetting that Kelly admitted, in his post game presser, to telling Rees that he was to chuck it up if Floyd drew single coverage on that play.

that was a great feature - no hitting - but a great job by Kelly and the Athletic Department to have that close involvement with the Faculty. I really liked the reactions from the professors talking about how it really gives them a chance to identify the football team as their students on a closer level.

I'm sure he was told to aim for the back of the end zone though. Questionable call, horrible throw.

Rees did make a terrible decision by (1) forcing a pass into double coverage, and then (2) throwing too late and too short. To quote IrishLax from an earlier thread:

Ugggggggggggggh we debated this a long time ago. Someone should go dig up the thread where I show the probability of an NFL kicker hitting a FG from that spot versus the probability of an interception.

It is 1% Kelly's fault for calling the play, and 99% Tommy Rees' fault for absolutely shitting the bed on that throw. Completely inexcusable how bad that throw was... I don't care if you're a JV QB who hasn't hit puberty yet you need to throw that ball longer and earlier.
