Pretty decent review. But if ND achieves their "worst-case" scenario at 6-6, I am going to freak out. There is no way I could handle a 6-6 season after the promise we saw at the end of last season.

I know what I would do and it would include finishing my 100+ bottles of whisky and a liver transplant.

Actually guys, thirteen has been turned into an "unlucky number" only recently in our culture. Traditionally, it stood as a symbol of Jesus at the Last Supper, and was interpreted as meaning one who would suffer but rise gloriously "from the Dead". Now, when you think about THAT, how could they have picked a BETTER number?? Notre Dame rising in Glory after a decade of being dead to the elites of college football --- and they saw us coming on a cloud raining Manti thunder and Kelly lightning, and GOD saw that it was Good.

Hear the Thunder.....

Potential

I think this ranking is what ND can do and not where they are. ND should be in the 20's, we need to win a few games before we get that high.

Middle of the second ten is justified. That's not just because we HAVE actually proved something already on the field with a team that has basically everybody back [see some of the ancient analyses about how the team fared versus opponents' other opponents comparatively], but also the unusual amount of unsettledness, or plain weakness, of many other powers going into this year. I find it tough to find a lot of pre-season super-teams this season at this early "paper" stage.

People like Florida, Texas, PSU, Michigan, anyone in the ACC except FSU and possibly VT [but QB issues there], even OSU & USC: all these folks are describable as very flawed. People are saying that the whole SEC east is down. Are OK State and A&M really sound?? etc etc etc.

I say ND in the mid-second-ten is defensible.

I see what your saying, but what about this? Notre Dame was a 4-5 team before that 4 game stretch. They played Utah, which had just come off a huge loss to TCU and still hadn't recovered (not the same Utah). Army, no explanation needed. USC, they had their leader hurt. That offense was not the same without Barkley. Wait till this year, the score will be much higher than last. Lastly, Miami. From what I hear, Miami was not in any shape to play the game and most any team could have walked in there and taken that game.

I love my Irish, but I still need more for them to be even 15. If they get through USF, Michigan, and Michgan St. 3-0, I think it could a special year.

Actually, it only became unlucky in western culture in the Middle Ages, when the Knights Templar were arrested en mass by Philip IV, King of France, (he wanted more money, what else is new), on what day, you guessed it, Friday, October 13, 1307. This eventually resulted in the burning at the stake of Jacques de Molay seven years later.

It is a really powerful and lucky number in the east, and as I heard Bob Diaco just quote some eastern philosophy in his most recently released interview, I consider that a powerful sign . . .

...

Oh, our opponents had a dramatic loss, lost a key starter to injury, Miami was NOT in shape (Ask Va Tech!), blah, blah,

HELLO, where was Crist? Allen? Rudolph? Riddick? Floyd? etc, etc, etc. Did you miss Kelly's "Next Man In" interview?

How devastating to the team physique was the MSU loss? The Navy Debacle? The Tulsa INT snatching defeat from the jaws of victory?

Declan Sullivan?

Just who were you watching last year?

Utah had the full team that got blown out by TCU that also got blown out by ND. Nothing changed. You come off big blowout wins and have let downs... you DO NOT come off big losses and have "let downs"... especially not when you're playing Notre Dame.

Army is Army. Cool.

USC had a 5th year former 5* QB playing... and we were rolling with an 18 year old true frosh 3* with no arm strength. That is a completely moot point at best; at worst USC still had a huge advantage in the QB department.

Miami quit AFTER getting socked in the mouth. You think all of those guys playing for draft stock just mailed it in from the get go? Hell no. We made them look bad. Michael Floyd dominated a top NFL draft pick all day. Our OL stuffed their vaunted pass rush. And then some time around Jacory Harris' second or third pick is where they said "I want to go home." But discounting the whooping we put on them out of the gate is hilarious.

Overall your post gets a grade of D+. Your accurate assessment of Army is the only thing that saves it from being an F-.

USC home game. Late start. Home field refs didn't matter.

The Knights Templar thing is a modern invention. Friday and 13 came to be known as unlucky independently of one another.

Pops is correct on his history. In modern times, the assumption of Good Friday as a bad day, but aiming to the glorious resurrection later, was still in line with Friday the 13th being a good omen. But we humans being depressives [and lazy mentally], dropped the bigger picture and left it as bad luck.

By the way, in those older days, the visual symbol for this was The Phoenix --- a crash into ashes prior to regeneration into powerful life. Also, the old meditators saw this as a message to us that it takes great sacrifice and giving up of selfish wants to emerge out of mediocre limits into something far greater. That also seems like a proper "football message" for any aspiring player or team.

Meh, I think 13 is a little high. Being in the top 15 opens the door for the haters to say "see I told you Notre Ame is still garbage" if they lose 3 or 4 games this season.

The world that I've been living in doesn't change "Notre Dame haters" no matter how many we win, so what's the difference? Plus, we aren't going to lose four games. And even if we lost three, we'd still be in the top twenty.

Utah: Ranked at 15, everyone says it was a great win because of their ranking. I think after we could agree they barely belonged in the top 25. You don't think they lost confidence after that loss and were still stung by what happened?

USC: First, I don't care what you were ranked in high school. James Aldridge was a 5*, how did he pan out? There is a reason why he was behind Barkley. We were rolling??? 4 turnovers, only 296 yards, and 20 points scored (in a Brian Kelly offense) is not rolling. We are one easy catch away from losing the game.

Miami: I heard that Miami just didn't want to be there. There was a lot of turmoil. I said they weren't the same. They quit? They scored 14 of their 17 points in the 4th quarter.

I'm not denying the injury bug, DS, or anything else. I'm just hesitant to look at the 4 game winning streak and say we should be ranked 13 or celebrate it. I think there is potential in this team to be a BCS team.

lol... "rolling with" = using. Has nothing to do with performance of the team. In fact my whole point is that he was very bad and therefore we were at a greater disadvantage using Tommy as a replacement versus Mitch as a replacement. Nice reading comprehension.
