Will not be a major, major shift in some respects, as Fleming was playing somewhat of a hybrid end as it was. Hopefully this will allow us to utilize B. Smith, Te'o, H. Smith, Fleming, and Filer (plus MacDonald, Zeke?, etc...)

quick thoughts

1) for guys like brian smith and kerry neal, this is 3 different defenses in 4 years

2) louis nix needs to put on about 30 pounds to start at that nose hahaha

Nice I like that too. I love the LBs we have as a collective right now. Any word on Chuck Martin as a DB coach or anything?

Why Mcdonald instead of B smith???

I think this probably fits what we have the best. WE have a crop of big talented LB's and our DE's proabably profile as 3-4 DE's in the 290 range already. Jut missing a nose. Might be hard on Ian considering he lost a bunch of weight this offseason, and really played well... besides he seems to be a 2 gap DT more than a NT. but hey Kelly has a track record of proven success.... I'm sure it can't be worse than this year

Ethan Johnson and KLM were recruited to be big DE's in a 3-4 scheme. Both guys are kind of tweeners, but are the perfect blend of size and quickness for the 3-4 DE position.

Tyler Stockton, Brandon Newman, and Ian Williams need to split their offseason between the buffet line and the gym.

If Brian Kelly wants to build his team around the strengths of the personnel like he talks about, I think a 3-4 defense has to the answer.

B. Smith needs to prove himself all over again. He needs to learn now to tackle. I fit he fits better as a DE in nickel situations.

Don't forget Kerry Neal. He had an impressive Fr year and then we kind moved to the 4-3 with Tenuta's and he was kind of lost. In the 4-3 he was to small for a DE but to big for LB. In the 3-4 he will be a perfect OLB.

I see Flemming having a monster year next year though!

I agree on Brian Smith, he needs to prove he can wrap and lock down people. Fleming and Filer...bring it

Nix?

Here we go with elevating the new recruits to God like status again.

Id like to see Nix in 2012.

I don't think anyone is elevating him to god like status just yet, he is the prototypical Nose in a 3-4 though....Rivals compares him to Vince Wilfork, man I hope they are right.

This is a great start for Brian Kelly seeing the strength of our defensive personal. Im personally a 3-4 fan but Kelly will need to find a good 3-4 coach maybe Al Groh or some one from the alabama staff or NFL.

We should of never left the 3-4. though it's going to be tough recruiting for it because as we all know how some coaches(remain nameless) love to negative recruit against it..

YES!

EJ, KLM, and Ian up front.
Give me Fleming, Filer, Te'o, and B. Smith at linebacker with Neal and Harrison Smith getting in on the action as well. Finally a real defense is back.

Interesting to see how it will effect our tackles since we are 4 deep it could get crowded. It will certianly Help EJ and Cwyner at the end spot and guys like Fleming Neal and Filer will get to use all their tools. Keep big Brian Smith and Te'o in the middle should be good. Hopefully A-Mac gets some PT, saw him in high school and loved his attitude

And now we will see Uputo at DE and Leuders at OLB and some other moves with recruits as well. All I know is that getting Nix is very good for depth now.
