Since we're only taking 1 DE in this class, and we currently lead for Jarron Jones, I don't see Kaumatule getting an offer unless Jones gives a solid verbal to different school first.

where did you read/hear that we "lead" for Jones?

Inferred from the fact that: (1) he was blown away by his visit; and (2) he decommited from PSU right after it. He hasn't come out and named us his favorite, but most recruitniks consider Jones a ND lean right now.

This is what I've inferred as well.

Seems a pretty clear reading.

I have inferred the same thing, FWIW.

Not to derail, but Jones' family is a big fan of what ND offers. ND is feeling very good.

I'm pretty positive we will end up taking at least 2 DL and both will likely be DE's first with the ability to maybe develop into a DT should the need arise.

The numbers indicate that we'll want one DE and one DT; in other words, one guy who focuses on 5- and 3- tech (Jones), and another that focuses on 3- and 0- tech (Schutt, Day). We might end up taking two 5-/ 3-tech guys and shoehorning one into more of a DT role, but I don't think that's Plan A.

Unless Stockton is a sleeper, or Kelly's secretly planning on switching to a 4-3, Nix and Cwynar will be our only game-ready DTs in 2012, and only Nix in 2013. If we're sticking with a 3-4, we need a NT this year.

Edit: Is Stockton already considered a bust? He came in a consensus 4:s: DT, and at 6'1''/ 302, he's got the physical profile to give us some productive snaps at NT. If Kelly and co. feel that he gives us quality depth, then you may be right, Lax.

Yeah, the only thing I disagree with there is the thought that the second DL will be a NG focus. I have read in more than a couple places that ND really isn't recruiting a NG-first guy outside of Schutt who is seen to be a pure exception. Korren Kirven and Sheldon Day are both (I think, and correct me if I'm wrong) seen to be DE-first guys.

On Tyler Stockton... he is quite injury prone and I don't know if he can be labeled a bust yet. Not saying he'll have a Nick Fairley style breakout as he ages but who knows... might end up being a contributor.

Maybe not a NG-focus, but at least a DT focus. I know Kirven and Day could play DE for us as well, but with the current state of our depth chart, unless Stockton is ready to break out or we're switching to a 4-3, I don't see how one of our DL recruit this cycle doesn't get lots of reps at 0- and 3- tech.

I believe I read that we would be taking up to 3 DE's if it works out. 1/2 True DE's and/or 1/2 swing guys. NT is not necessarily a priority this year. Springmann & Schwenke have the potential for NT.

I'll defer to you guys, then. I've been staring at our depth chart too long.

Well if three it is, then I'll take Spence, Jones, and one of Schutt/Day. Do that for me and this guy is happy as ever :gbanana:

would love to see springmann and schwenke transtition into a nose guard...you're talking serious athleticism across the front if that's the case...however, wouldn't surprise me still to see springmann and up on offense

I can only imagine being a QB and seeing Manti Te'o doing that dance across the line from me. I would definitely **** my pants. I think I would just take the snap and go hand the ball to him.
