Intriguing prospect with both size and skill, plays at Manti and Robby's alma mater. Is hearing from ND, and lists the Irish among his five favorites because of the combination of strong program and strong academics. States he will camp at ND this summer.

Tidbit from ESPN:

Hawaii is always good for a few high level FBS recruits every year, especially in the trenches, and Luke Kaumatule (Honolulu, Hawaii./Punahou) could be the top prospect on the Islands this year.

Kaumatule has an intriguing combination of size and skill and he's drawing major college attention right now. He attended the Nike SPARQ Combine the last two years and put up an 87.57 SPARQ rating last January after running a 4.99-40 and jumping 29 inches in the vertical at 6-7, 242 pounds.

"I wasn't real happy with that performance," Kaumatule said. "I didn't train at all for the combine and learned a pretty valuable lesson that you have to always be ready. I'm a lot faster than that and I'm up to 260 pounds right now. I lost weight playing basketball but I'm feeling great now and I've been working really hard."

The defensive end had a big junior season totaling 83 tackles, 22 for loss, 12 sacks, batted down eight passes and recovered six fumbles. He's also carrying a 3.6 GPA in the classroom and would like to major in Engineering in college.

"Right now, my offers are from Hawaii, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, Stanford, Washington State, UCLA, Oregon and BYU," Kaumatule said. "I'm also hearing from Notre Dame, Alabama, Cal, Tennessee and Boise State.

"Education is big to me and my family and will be the number thing I look for in a school. Stanford is my top school right now and I also like Notre Dame, USC, UCLA and Cal, those are my five favorites because all are good programs but strong academic schools as well. I'm going to camp with Notre Dame this summer and also plan to attend the Nike camp at Washington and will check out the Huskies while I'm down there."

Listed as TE, but apparently he played DE in high school. Is he definitely being recruited as a TE? Seems like he could be a good Tackle prospect at 6'7", and he seems to be bulking up.

Kaumatule to camp at ND

Kaumatule to camp at ND

Tidbit from ESPN:

It would appear to me that it would be interesting news if Luke Kaumatule is really planning on coming all the way from Hawaii to camp at ND this summer. I haven't noticed that any other recruiting site has picked up on this ESPN report.

3.6 GPA, want to major in engineering.....Stanford already offered....if Luke can earn an offer at camp maybe that will keep the ND pipeline open to the Islands

I don't think ND's pipeline is in any danger.

Two more years with Teo will keep us fresh in the Island's mind.

Still wish we could have gotten Paulay Asiata last year; but Luke sounds good, too.

Big big kids like this who are able to play TE usually end up moving over one spot to OT and become stars. ie Nate Solder

Terry: thanks---don't understand any of these fancy manipulations. DO understand the need for big powerful Hawaiians, though.

Kaumatule Hopes To hear More From ND

ESPN also has him ranked as a 3* at a 79 grade.

Long story short, if ND offers him, seems like they would be his number 1.
He's up to 11 offers, mostly from the Pac 12.
Distance doesn't mean anything to him.
He talks to Manti when Manti visits because Manti's dad is the RB coach at Kaumatule's high school.
Describes himself as a speed rusher but also likes to stop the run.

Free article up on ISD about him. ESPN has him graded out as a 79 and a 3*.

Sounds like he could be ND's if they offer.

I forgot about this kid. He is intriguing. I could totally see him as a late add to the class. Maybe the next Kona? Either way, we have become a soft landing spot for Hawaii talent, and I like that.

Te'o has been a big impact on this team when it comes to that.

I think we should offer the kid now. He has offers from most Of the Pac12 including ones from Oregon , Udub, and Stanford and also one from BYU. I'm nOT sure how many DL we can take this year but I think this 6'7" behemoth is deserving of a offer.

The article said that Manti Te'os dad is the RB coach at Kamulate's HS.

Interesting...new system implemented by the mods to ensure we don't get sued? lol

No. If you have under a certain amount of posts on your account (20 or 25 I think) then the mods have to approve any links as protection against spammers.

Linemen learn the film never lies - ESPN
Corey Long ESPN
July 9

It's been a different experience for Kaumatule, as he has gotten a better idea of what future competition will look like once he gets into college.

The 6-8, 250-pounder doesn't often find challenges like this on the island.

"One thing about the players in the mainland is that they are huge," Kaumatule said. "All of these 300-pound linemen are something I'm not used to seeing. It's a good experience for me and DeForest [Buckner]."

Kaumatule says most of his scholarship offers are from Pac-12 schools, and he's already visited Hawaii and Stanford.

"I love Hawaii, obviously. I felt comfortable there because it's home and it's Hawaiian culture," Kaumatule said. "But Stanford was so different and wonderful. It was a whole new world for me."Kaumatule is leaning toward playing college football on the mainland.

"I think it's something I have to do to serve my best interests in the future," Kaumatule said. "Stanford is a wonderful academic institution, and it can open so many doors for my life. There are a lot of great schools on the West Coast that I am looking into."

Go East young man! Go East!
