He may have lost the game, but Purdue coach Danny Hope has fond memories of the Boilers thrilling battle with Notre Dame two years ago in West Lafayette.
Hope was in Goshen on Thursday night meeting with the Purdue Club of Elkhart County. He talked about the importance of the rivalry game with Notre Dame, which dates back to 1896.
Like the game two years ago, this year's October 1st battle will be a night game. The last one was won by the Irish in the final minute when Jimmy Clausen connected with Kyle Rudolph for the go ahead score.
"I thought it was one of the greatest football atmospheres I had ever been around," Hope explained Thursday. "I thought it was exceptional. We're looking forward to bringing Notre Dame back to Ross Ade this year and repeating that great college football experience."
The two teams have played 82 times, the most of any Irish opponent other than Navy. In fact, they haven't missed playing a game since the end of World War II.
"It's a great rivalry," Hope says. "The Notre Dame game is one of the great games on our schedule. Two BCS football teams that battle it out every year with a lot of emotion, pride on the line. I think it's a shot in the arm for Indiana football in general."
Notre Dame holds the all-time edge in the series at 54-26-2, including victories in four of the last five meetings.
