Here are a few interesting notes from the Rivals chat with Geno:

-When asked if competition would play into his decision he brought up ND's DB class, saying competition wouldn't factor into it.
-Confirmed his June 24-26 visit to ND
-Prays the rosary before games with some teammates
-Doesn't mind playing in the cold

Don't want to give out premium content, but I thought these were a few good positives for ND.

It isn't premium content. The chat transcript is for anyone to look at.

And I'm a pessimist when it comes to ND recruiting (A long story short, I saw Greg Little play in HS and I was his biggest fan when he committed to ND... Only to be slapped in the face when he turned to the dark side). But if you had to pick a favorite out of his transcript, it'd have to be ND, right?

It's actually my gf from ~2 years (buzzkill)... Shoot them Elizabeth! That show's insane. But seriously, I think we have as good of a chance as anyone at Geno after reading the script.

Lol. We have a shot. Trooper Taylor is his recruiter for Auburn. I wonder how much cash is set aside for this years class.

ND or Tennesesse. Both my parents were teachers(Dad was a professor) so I know the pressure will be on for a good education. That will help us.

I loved the way he responded in that environment. Also the spelling from the SEC fans was great.

I came away from that thinking he really liked Notre Dame. Even with Darby and Shepard committed, he doesn't seem to fret. That is nice.

The Irish defensive backfield needs some guys with 4.41 speed.

Thanks for the link to that. I enjoyed reading it. I liked how all the ND fans' questions seemed educated and had substance behind it. I noticed some questions were steered towards reasons to not go to ND...that was annoying. Those sec fans are something else.
I feel more optimistic about Geno now. I thought it was sort of a long shot but seems like the interest is there and legit. I'd like him to be IRISH.

He also said he would rather play safety than DB. I wonder if ND is thinking about doing that or not.

Really interested to see how this plays out. At 6' 180 how much weight would he have to add to play safety? 25 lbs? Seems like a bit much to ask to add to that frame.

His twitter pic is him in an Auburn jersey

Do you know if the pic is while he is at Auburn? Giving a kid a jersey, putting their name on something associated with the uniform, etc is a recruiting violation. Not that Auburn gives a rat about the rules, but if Auburn gave him that jersey or showed him a locker with it in it, then they (once again) committed an NCAA violation.

I'm sure it was overlooked by AU because they were too busy hiding the suitcase full of cash.

Can't they technically give him a jersey or gear while he is on-campus visiting, but he must give it back once he leaves campus? I think they do this for pictures. I think that is the rule, cause I remember reading something about it on a USC site when pics of De'Anthony Thomas surfaced in Oregon gear.

I just did some research and stand corrected. That pic looks like it is in the locker room. If it was taken out of the locker room or he wore it in a "game type atmosphere", it would be a violation. But I didn't see anywhere where it said that you cannot have a kid wear a jersey in the locker room.

I remember last season, UGA got a violation when recruiting Crowell. They gave him a jersey and lined him up behind the actual linemen for the team. This obviously is a "game type atmosphere" and they werent allowed to phone recruits for a month.

If anyone finds a pic of him wearing this jersey outside of the locker room. Email it to the NCAA compliance.

He is at big cat weekend in Auburn. They're probably scrimmaging or something and split the two teams with blue and white jerseys.

If they lined them up, or they took them to the practice field in the jerseys, it would be a violation.

when Clay Burton commited to ND last year he said that they brought him into the lockeroom and ND had a locker set up with his jersey in it for him so I dont think its illegal

I feel good about our chances after that chat: (1) he did a great job of brushing off the comment about our weather and relevance; (2) claims to "like playing in the cold"; (3) academics are important to him since both his mother and grandmother are teachers; and most importantly (4) his pregame ritual is praying to Our Lady.

Taking what he says at face value, we've got to be in the lead on those parameters, no? Our depth chart looks as inviting as any of those other schools, and they can't touch us on spirituality, academic quality, or graduation rate.

Geez fellas, I tried to clarify and said that I stood corrected. You can certianly give a kid a jersey, but you cant do it in a "game type atmosphere". Sorry for my confusion, homies.

Whiskey - Totally agree with you dude. I think his comments certianly seem like he is tailored to come to ND. We'll see.

Everyone - What's your opinion on this. Rankings aside, would you say that if we landed Geno, are DB class is as kick @ss as last year's DE class? Or would you just say its killer, but duplicating last year's awesomeness is like seeing a unicorn.... once in a lifetime?

I'd say it's just about as awesome, but it's almost like a sequel to a perfect movie. It might still kick ***, but it's still the sequel.

If all these DBs turn out to be lock down guys...well then it might just be better. This defense will just be plain nasty though.

Assuming we get Geno Smith I think Smith, Shepard, Darby, Prosise, and Barrati are equal to Lynch, Tuitt, Ishaq, and Niklas. If we were to get a top noch Safety to like say Shaq Thomson then that would put this class ahead of last years.

I think that's pretty spot on. If we get someone like Shaq+Geno this might be the best overall DB haul I can remember for any team in the past 5 or 10 years.

The crazy thing is if you put that together with the DE/OLB haul from last year and our apparent depth at ILB... the only thing we are missing is NT in this class to give us one ridiculously talented (on paper) defensive recruiting haul over the past two years.

Tommy Schutt, come on down.
