This wasn't really a surprise. He's been very high on ND from the start. Really versatile player. Played TE up until this year. Probably equate him to a guy like Jordan Prestwood was last year, minus the de-commitment. Very talented guy.

Very good pull

I think this is our center of the future. Great pick-up! Two quality linemen this early on takes the pressure off and lets us focus on some of the bigger names that we are pursuing.

Rated an 80 by espn

Where does it say that?

On ESPN.

By way of comparison, here are ESPN's ratings of our other recruits this year:

Ferguson - 83
Darby - 81
Shepard -81
Harrell - 80
Decker - 79

Last year our highest rated recruit on ESPN was Aaron Lynch - 84. We had six recruits in our 2011 class rated higher than 80 (Lynch, Hegarty, Ishaq, D Daniels, Koyack, Tuitt). Obviously, other recruiting services rate players differently, so these ESPN numbers aren't gospel, but I do think it provides some interesting context.

Where do you see those rating numbers on ESPN's website? I don't see their ratings for any players this year, and I'm pretty sure they haven't been released yet.

There has been discussion in a lot of other threads about these rating being inaccurate, especially considering that according to this Ferguson is rated as our highest rated prospect which is obviously not the case. I put no stock in those grades that are on there.

The ESPN 150 comes out Monday and Tuesday I believe.

On ESPN's Notre Dame football homepage. If you scroll down, the 2012 recruits are listed with their ratings in a box on the right side of the page.

As far as questions about whether the numbers are accurate, I honestly don't know. If people have a reason to believe the numbers have just been randomly assigned at this point, then that is something to consider. I don't see why ESPN would randomly assign ratings if the numbers do not have any significance, but maybe they did do that. According to what is there currently, Ferguson, Darby, Shepard and Harrell are listed as ESPN150 watch list players. Darby is listed as an Under Armor All-American. Maybe the grades will be updated/adjusted when the official ESPN150 is released.

Thanks for pointing that out. How come those ratings appear there, but no where else? Is it a glitch?

Could be. It seems like some people are saying not to give any credence to the numbers - that they will be replaced by accurate numbers at some future date - so I'm just as confused as you are, if not more.

I think it's really interesting that Ferguson is our top-rated player by ESPN's standards (if those are accurate preliminary grades). Before I saw this consensus seemed to be that Darby and Shepard were the top dogs. It should be interesting to see what Rivals has to say when they take the time to evaluate and rate Ferguson.

analysts have already said that Ferguson is a potential low 4 star guy once they get to see him more. plus with the other big time offers he's getting they will take notice...wouldn't surprise me to see him as a 4 star at some point in the fall.

The only thing is that he is given an 83 rating- which is higher than everyone in last year's class with the exception of Lynch:

College Football Recruiting Schools - ESPN

That would put him in the 4-5 star range which is quite a departure from the low 4 star rating. I should probably move this conversation over the the Ferguson thread...

I am thinking so, unless they awarded their highest score ever to a guy named R Aguayo from FSU who is a kicker and a 99 rating...

ESPN's rating system has puzzled me for years.

Also, he is listed as a 150 watch list guy (which I know isn't the same as being in the final 150, but everyone is not listed as a 150 watch list player). Who knows what his final grades are, and really, who cares? As people are so fond of pointing out, the ratings are not a guarantee of anything.

Still, I'd love for someone at ESPN (or someone here that is familiar with ESPN's system) to explain whether these current numbers have any value at all.
