Also, he is listed as a 150 watch list guy (which I know isn't the same as being in the final 150, but everyone is not listed as a 150 watch list player). Who knows what his final grades are, and really, who cares? As people are so fond of pointing out, the ratings are not a guarantee of anything.

Still, I'd love for someone at ESPN (or someone here that is familiar with ESPN's system) to explain whether these current numbers have any value at all.

Now I don't know for a fact, but I believe all the accumulated awards or honors (like the Under Armour All-American and the 150 Watch List) are all accurate, but the grades are random and phooey.

As for Harrell, I'm still very happy to have him aboard.

Nice offer list, always nice to lock up the trenches! Having said that, I don't know how many scholarships will be available for this class, but I believe it's under 20. I kind of hope the crew pears back their recruiting efforts a bit and focuses on the 'studs' from here on out. We have a solid base of recruits and it's very early. I'd expect us to get quite a few through the year (at least 2 verbals after USC game, win or lose), with some switching to us towards NSD after we pull off a 9-10 win season.

My best guess on the count was 21 [but I'm a bit more Machiavellian on denying 5th years than most.]

Lemming said he expects 4 OTs and the next two to be big names [I suppose two of the west coast guys]. His view of Harrell was that he was an exceptional athlete but needed some time [again, I'm guessing, but I think he meant O-Line "power" gains] to develop, but that later in his career he'd be a solid starter.

Exact same ratings as Ferguson, strangely. I've got a feeling both Harrell and Ferguson will be considered 4-star recruits by NSD.

I agree. Maybe not by each service, but the majority.

Harrell Heading To Opening

Thursday, 30 June 2011
Christian McCollum

Mark Harrell still feels like he has a lot to prove.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pound offensive lineman from Charlotte, N.C., (Charlotte Catholic) compiled quite the offer sheet before giving his verbal commitment to Notre Dame back in May. But despite offers from schools like Auburn, Clemson, Michigan, North Carolina, Stanford, Tennessee and Virginia Tech among several others, Harrell hasn’t received much love from many of the recruiting sites. ESPN rates Harrell as a four-star prospect, but he’s listed as a three-star player by most other services.

Harrell will get a chance to prove himself next week, when he attends The Opening in Beaverton, Ore. The five-day Nike event will feature some of the nation’s elite 2012 prospects competing amongst each other and training with some top coaches.

“It’s going to be a bit of a challenge,” Harrell said of The Opening. “There are some really, really good guys out there. I was looking at that list and there are a lot of highly-rated guys out there, some big guys. I think it’s going to be a test. I just want to go and show what I’m made of. I feel like I have something to go out and prove. I feel like it’ll help me in the future because I’m not going to be playing against kids like that every Friday during my high school season.”

Harrell admitted being a bit surprised about receiving an invitation because he wasn’t able to participate in a Nike Football Training Camp back in May due to injury. Harrell ruptured a tendon in his foot during football season, but it wasn’t diagnosed until about a week before the training camp in Durham, N.C., on May 22nd.

“You had to go to that training camp to get an invite, but I was out with a ruptured tendon before I was able to do that,” he said. “It was nice to have them evaluate my film still. I sent it back into them and was like, ‘If you want to look at it, you can. If not, I understand.’ It’s nice to be considered one of the best. I know I’m not the highest-rated prospect at that camp. I’m probably one of the lower-rated linemen to be honest, but it’ll be fun to go out and try to prove something and see what I can do.”

Harrell won’t be the only Irish commitment on hand as Tee Shepard, Deontay Greenberry, Justin Ferguson and David Perkins will also be in attendance.

“It’s going to be nice to get to know some of my teammates before I even step on campus with them,” said Harrell. “I’m going to get to see how they play and get to know them as people. They’re going to be my teammates for the next four to five years, so it’s going to be a lot of fun meeting them and spending four or five days with all of my teammates.”

While the Irish skill commitments are already thinking about the Nike swag they’ll pick up when they arrive in Oregon, Harrell isn’t expecting much.

“I know the 7-on-7 guys get all of that fancy stuff with customized jerseys and all of that stuff,” Harrell laughed. “The linemen, we’re padding up and just hitting each other.”

Harrell said he’s heard there will be some NFL players on hand, but hasn’t been told who.

“I don’t think they’re letting that secret out yet,” he said. “It’ll be really fun to be coached by them and spend some time with them.”

As far as recruiting goes, Harrell is glad he got his decision out of the way early.

“The multiple calls and letters from other schools have slowed down and I’ve gotten to enjoy my summer and kind of relax,” he said. “I’ve been able to do my workouts and focus on my high school season rather than which school I’m going to go to.

“It’s nice to get that behind me and know where I’m going and feel good about it. It’s definitely a relief and feels like the weight of the world is off my shoulders.”

Read an assessment of Harrell's play at the Nike thing:

"Mark Harrell, a Notre Dame commit, established himself as an absolute run-blocking machine. For a taller tackle prospect, Harrell does an exceptional job of firing off the ball with extremely low pad level and tight hands. The former TE needs to develop his pass protection, but is one of the more impressive run blockers I have seen this year. "

Sounds awfully good to me for a guy participating with a recovering injury. Think we have a big winner here.

I knew he was a guard.

Is there anything that matters less than how fast (or slow) an offensive lineman runs 40 yards in a straight line? Honestly, if it was 7.3 I wouldn't care as long as the kid can block. And by all accounts, he can.

The only measurement I care about is if he can pancake a 280lb lineman.

Harrell Opens Eyes At Opening

Harrell was also busy trying to add to the recruiting class and spent time talking with Indiana defensive lineman Sheldon Day.

"I was in Sheldon’s ear a ton,” said Harrell. “I was talking to him about Notre Dame. I think he enjoys it, he’s been up there quite a bit. I know him and Perkins are real close. If we could land him, it’d be awesome because he’s a great player.”

He was also talking to Garnett's parents. He's a smart kid.

Good man. This is a big reason why I like to get early commits to ND....they talk to other recruits about it to give them a third party opinion of the school.

Decker-Garnett-Harrell-Banner-Peat......that would be the best Oline coup this year.
