Hawaii is always good for a few high level FBS recruits every year, especially in the trenches, and Luke Kaumatule (Honolulu, Hawaii./Punahou) could be the top prospect on the Islands this year.
Kaumatule has an intriguing combination of size and skill and he's drawing major college attention right now. He attended the Nike SPARQ Combine the last two years and put up an 87.57 SPARQ rating last January after running a 4.99-40 and jumping 29 inches in the vertical at 6-7, 242 pounds.
"I wasn't real happy with that performance," Kaumatule said. "I didn't train at all for the combine and learned a pretty valuable lesson that you have to always be ready. I'm a lot faster than that and I'm up to 260 pounds right now. I lost weight playing basketball but I'm feeling great now and I've been working really hard."
The defensive end had a big junior season totaling 83 tackles, 22 for loss, 12 sacks, batted down eight passes and recovered six fumbles. He's also carrying a 3.6 GPA in the classroom and would like to major in Engineering in college.
"Right now, my offers are from Hawaii, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, Stanford, Washington State, UCLA, Oregon and BYU," Kaumatule said. "I'm also hearing from Notre Dame, Alabama, Cal, Tennessee and Boise State.
"Education is big to me and my family and will be the number thing I look for in a school. Stanford is my top school right now and I also like Notre Dame, USC, UCLA and Cal, those are my five favorites because all are good programs but strong academic schools as well. I'm going to camp with Notre Dame this summer and also plan to attend the Nike camp at Washington and will check out the Huskies while I'm down there."
