“I ended up talking to Coach Martin later that day and he was just explaining the situation and saying don’t worry about it at all,” Smith said. “He said they’re just trying to build a championship defense. He said last year they signed the defensive linemen and this year they’re trying to get the fab five defensive backs. I’m buying into what they’re saying. They’re just trying to build a national championship team.”

Currently has Alabama as his leader. We are looking to take 5 DBs in the 2012 class.

Has Alabama as his leader but also stated that was because of how familiar he was with the school and coaching staff. He's not an Alabama lock by any means. Georgia is also very much in the mix for Geno. If we get him on campus, we have a shot. He stays in good contact with Tee Shepard.

He has stated repeatedly that he is going to check out ND this summer, and that the real reason Alabama is out front is because he has been there and is so familiar with them. If he follows through and gets to campus, we have a legitimate shot.

Per ESPN:

Alabama remains out in front for ESPNU 150 Watch List CB Geno Smith of Georgia, as we told you last week, but the rest of his list of favorites is rounding into shape.

Tennessee currently sits second on Smith's list, with Florida State in third. But Smith is visiting Tallahassee this weekend, and he tells Keith Niebuhr of Rivals.com that a good visit could jump the Noles up his list -- although most likely not into the top spot.

Smith said that he has been to the Bama campus four or five times and will be there again next week when he travels to Tuscaloosa for a sevon-on-seven tournament. "I think I have a great opportunity there," he said. "It's the right situation. I like their scheme and coach (Nick) Saban's philosophy as far as defense -- and off the field, building you as a person."

A fourth school also has a chance to get into the mix with Smith: Notre Dame. He told Niebuhr that he plans to take a trip to South Bend this summer.

We need to get him on campus to have a legitimate shot. Hopefully he follows through in his visit this summer.

He said he has a top three but still needs to visit ND before he has a firm top three.

After saying for several weeks that Alabama was his favorite school, ESPNU 150 Watch List CB Geno Smith of Georgia had a change of heart last weekend. After a trip to, of all places, Auburn, Smith declared the Tigers his new leader, something he confirmed on Thursday to Kipp Adams of UGASports.com.

"Auburn is definitely my number 1," Smith told Adams, "and really after that you have Alabama, Florida State and Tennessee, in alphabetical order."

Smith went on to say that he places a lot of value in his visits -- "At schools like FSU, Alabama and Auburn, they have really made me feel like I am a priority" -- suggesting that he could change his mind again with a little wining-and-dining from another suitor (or at least just the dining part).

Smith added that he expects a renewed push from his home-state Bulldogs -- coaches "have really been telling me recently that I am their top guy, but I just do not feel like it" -- which could make them a factor before he decides. For now, though, the two Alabama schools have the upper hand.

Thanks to their new "HoverRound".

I can't speak for OMM, but I prefer a Rascal™ over a Hoveround™. I can even pop a wheelie on it with a fully charged battery!

It's as frisky as a fawn pooping on my front lawn.

My apologies to Geno for the part I played in hijacking his thread, though light hearted diversion is a good thing.

Wait --- I need a license to scoot about on my Rascal???

"License? I don't need no steenking license!!!"

That would be sweet if it would be the same w/e (June 11th?) that Tee and Deontay are planning to visit.

Give me Geno Smith and Yuri Wright...

and I'll be pretttty pleased with this db recruiting class.

Honestly, ND has a legit shot at landing Tee, Darby, Nicky, Geno, and Yuri....

I can describe how amazing that would be.

He is still a long shot at best. It will be very difficult to get him out of the south. Auburn and Alabama are his top two but I bet UGA will be in it at the end.

FWIW he is also tight with Keith Marshall.

It might be faster to make a list of people with whom Keith Marshall is not tight.

May be a long shot still, but always good to get the kids on campus & see the school, facilities and meet the coaches. Good news and shows that he's interested.
