Lifelong ND "Fan" Now Cheers for Michigan

Reader column: Lifelong Notre Dame fan now cheers for Michigan | Detroit Free Press | freep.com

I have been a Notre Dame fan my whole life, and I have taken a lot of heat because of it.

I am about to do something I never thought would happen: root for the Wolverines. I have put a lot of thought and soul searching into this decision, and the deciding factor was my two sons.

My first little nudge to the other side was the fact that as a fan, I feel like Notre Dame keeps snubbing the Big 10, which in my opinion, is the best conference in college football.

The second reason is that I had an opportunity to go to the Big House and watch the Wolverines play the Hawkeyes. What a great experience!

The final reason is my two sons. I would like to be able to share these kind of experiences with them as they get older, and since the Big House is close to where I live, that would be possible.

As a college football fan, I have always respected the Michigan progra, and I have also been a fan of certain players. In my opinion, Jarrett Irons will always be the standard by which future Wolverine linebackers will be measured, but that's another column altogether.

Maybe the transition to cheering on the Wolverines won't be that difficult after all.

I just laughed and puked at the same time...

I "luked."

These are poor and terrible excuses to break allegiance. It's people like that guy that would have saluted Germany, just so he and his sons could have had great times together.

He's teaching his sons a lack of loyalty.

Good job, dad...

This guy will feel like a huge moron after Kelly wins a title here in the next ten years. Just kidding.

...My God. Nearly jinxed the whole program there.

And what kind of bull**** reasoning is that? From what I've gathered, he's "converting" due to...

1. He went to the Big House and loved it.
2. Michigan's closer to home???

The first comment in the newspaper sums it up nicely: "This is so dumb". I'll bet that this is some highly "modern" shallow individual who thinks that it is neat to get his name in the paper. If anyone ever showed up with a TV camera, he'd probably have to throw his pants away [once he stopped fainting]. Hel* wimpmaster, root for them both, if you have to root for UofM. [One of my very closest friends in Kalamazoo roots for both ND and UofM --- causing him great pain once a year, and has survived it.]

It also seems to be a bit of a marketing ploy for the Big Ten. Surely Delany didn't write this... lol.

The guy is just a moron, that's all. Not because he says he's now a Michigan fan (although that would qualify him), but because he is so shallow and fickle with his fandom, as OMM said. Who cares? He's an idiot.

The thing that got me was him crying that ND is snubbing the big 10 and he thinks they are the best in college football.

Come on now....

Come on now....

I'm from PA and graduated from Penn State. I been inside Beaver Stadium many of times and still a die hard IRISH fan. Nothing compares to being in South Bend for a college football game. My whole family roots for Penn State and their isn't any love lost. If he switched like that, we don't want him on our side rooting for ND. Happy Easter everyone! GO IRISH!

Why is this even news worthy?

Better yet, why am I upset over this dude's fandom change?

He's obviously not a big football fan. If this is real and not just a puff piece to get readers than I am glad he is no longer a ND fan. BK and Father Jenkins would literally have to kick my pregnant wife in the stomach at the same time while tazing (tazering?) me to have me stop following the Irish.. but most of all Id never switch to Michigan!! Ha.. if anything Id stop watching NCAA football altogether.

Basically it all comes down to the fact that it is more convenient for him to root for Michigan. What a f'in joke. Loser. I just might drive up to Michigan and kick this guy square in the nuts. It wouldn't be convenient for me, but being a fan is not about convenience.

You'd need to make sure your passport is current. The man is from Windsor, Ontario. Which might explain a lot.*

*My sincere apologies to all TRUE Irish fans in Canada.

I check freep almost on a daily basis as I live in the Metro Detroit area so I always see the reader submitted articles and I love getting a chuckle out of them.

One of the first I read was about 8 months ago that said the Detroit Tigers and GM Dave Dombrowski need to get Cliff Lee, Carl Crawford and Victor Martinez. The writer claimed that if he didn't do this, Dombrowski should lose his job. For those keeping score at home, Dombrowski got 1 of 3 and is still (at the time of this post) the GM of the Tigers. Check out some of the other titles; NBA to blame for Piston walkout, Lions show signs of class and improvement and more (really?!?! It's the Lions!).

I say good riddance to this "fan." If you can't remain a fan in times of trouble or when it isn't convenient for you, then you were never a fan to begin with. Have fun sitting in your 11 inches of space with 112,000 other sheep bemoaning the officiating each and every play.

They had to have made this story up just to get hits, because no sane Notre Dame fan would ever jump of the wagon to join a Michigan one. It's like jumping out of a lifeboat and onto the Titanic.

Honestly, the guy was only a Notre Dame "fan" in the first place. He could probably tell you that Brian Kelly is the coach and we had some freshman dude win some games at the end of the year. And ND beat USC last year. He probably couldn't even tell you who Ishaq Williams is, couldnt tell you what number Deion Walker is, or even give you the name of a single assistant coach. I'm sorry but if you can change from ND to Michigan, you were never a fan and you know nothing about fanhood. Not worried about the loss of a bandwagon wanna be "fan".
