Facebooking Recruits...OK or not?

For the record, its the contacting that concerns me more than anything. I personally wouldnt "friend" a commit, but I dont play Dungeons and Dragons either. If frantically searching for 17-18 year old boys to contact on facebook is someone's thing, then go for it. To each their own.

I am friends with a couple of the recruits, but would never bug them about going to ND or start asking questions. Kinda bugs me with some of the stuff ND fans start telling the kids... Do they not think Kelly and staff has told them how good of a school ND is?

Yea, I agree due to the Knucklehead factor. We have all seen the guy who says something out of line or offensive to a player or coach... the problem is Facebook allows knuckleheads easier access to perfect their craft.

I think it actually makes the Notre Dame fan base look desperate and pathitic. I played another sport but if this happened to me ( I wasnt important enough to get attention as a scrub ) I'd think it was more of a nuisance.

I'm mainly with phork on this. No it isn't ok. It's one thing to have friends of yours that you actually know on facebook. It is a whole different thing to be adding people you've never met, and probably will never meet in your life on facebook, regardless of whether or not they are going to play collegiate sports.
As per the scouts, rivals, etc... Well, that's their job, much like a college coach, those people are paid to keep up on that stuff. It's different when Bill Johnson from Idaho friends some young kid from Florida just because he's going to Boise St. I think the average age gap of it makes it a little creepier, (the 40 year old guy friending the 18 year old kid) but that aside, it's just a stupid practice altogether.

I think both sides are Over dramitizing both sides. Can it be creepy. Yes but not always. Is it ok to leave messages for recruits sometimes but not always. It depends on who and how it is being used. Facebook is a major part of my generation and how it communicates. But it can be abused by anyone, just like bullying or sexual abuse that can come from it. Just calm down and be smart.

Personally don't see anything wrong with asking if someone will take a visit but bashing a recruit on a message board is pretty low too.

Than what is the point of twitter and why is it so popular? I personally use mine as a twitter type in regaurds to any recruits/commits I have on there. They post info aimed at the thousands of friends/fans they have as do the ones on twitter. They will post things such as in home visits, official visits, how their game performances were. Another outlet besides the media and ND websites to get info. Quite a bit of the info put on here about recruits is from their social networking pages. Again I do not believe in contacting them at all.

When I first saw someone here was friending recruits I thought it was a little wierd too. My Facebook is just friends, primary purpose was to give the UNC fans crap last year. It was a good year for that, kinda got boring to be honest. Anyway I digress.

When Hayes decommited, I looked at his Facebook page. I don't know what I was expecting, but I was surprised. It was like a "fan club" page. I was thinking these kids are in high school, they haven't done anything yet but there it was.

I guess if that is the way these recruits operate, more power to them. If someone here befriends them, I don't care.

With that said, I am concerned about posting, emailing, instant messaging anything beyond a congratulatory type message. Negative comments are a no-no, but even what we may think is a positve post or an impassioned post to come to Notre Dame may be the straw that makes the kid think "that's enough, I'm not going to Notre Dame". Who knows?!

That said, all of this is kind of a mute discussion. The train has left the station. Every school's fans are jumping on these kid's pages and if we don't, the kid might even perceive as a slight........

Still think the coaches would prefer the fans would stay out of it.
