BK Talks Injuries, Replacements
Written by Christian McCollum Wednesday, 13 October 2010 17:34
Allen may miss the Western Michigan game.Another day, another injury for Notre Dame to deal with.
Running back Armando Allen did not participate in Wednesday’s practice because of a hip flexor. Allen’s status for Saturday’s game against Western Michigan is in doubt.
“We’re going to be cautious with him,” Brian Kelly said following the practice. “We think we can be with Cierre (Wood) and (Robert) Hughes and Jonas (Gray) is going to be back this week. We’ve had six rugged games, physical games. We’re going to be cautious here going into this weekend with Armando.”
Gray is cleared to play after missing the last two games with a strained groin. Allen will dress for the game and is already lobbying the head coach to play.
“He’s already told me that he’s got to play,” Kelly said. “I didn’t know the history, but he hasn’t got to seven games in a season so this is kind of a milestone for him. He’s going to want to play, we just want to be careful with him.”
Offensive tackle Taylor Dever missed the Pittsburgh game with a hamstring injury and he could miss this weekend’s game as well.
“He’s still not anchored the way I want him on pass rush,” said Kelly. “We’re going to have to see. That’s not a situation where I’m ready to make a decision on him. He’s going to have to show another day. He was better today than yesterday. I need to see a little bit more tomorrow.”
Matt Romine beat Andrew Nuss out for the vacant tackle spot last week and although the staff was pleased with his performance, he’s going to have to beat Nuss out again this week if Dever can’t go.
“They’re competing all week again,” Kelly said. “You’ve got to understand, Nuss hadn’t had much play at left tackle. He’s picking it up really quick. We’re fortunate, we’ve got two guys there we feel confident in.”
Kelly confirmed that tight end Kyle Rudolph will have surgery on his hamstring on Friday with former Irish and NFL linebacker and current Notre Dame surgeon Brian Ratigan performing the procedure.
Kelly is confident in sophomore Tyler Eifert and senior Mike Ragone to step in for the All-American candidate at tight end.
“I really like both of them,” Kelly said. “They’re a great tandem and a complement. I think they’re going to fill in and do a really, really good job. I’m not concerned about that position really.”
The staff has also been pleased with the development of junior linebacker Darius Fleming at the Cat position.
“He’s struggled a little bit in space, especially in pass coverage,” Kelly said. “You remember the Michigan game, we really struggled into the short field on that last drive and a lot of that was his fits were not proper. He’s gotten much better at those. I think that’s the first progression and then when we kick him down and put his hand in the ground and go four-down, he’s been really good off the edge.”
