I don't particularly love his standup, but that has more to do with style and timing things that aren't my preference. I love that he is on our side and has been a great public ambassador as a Notre Dame fanatic (in every sense of the word).

I’ve never watched anything more than a clip here and there of his stand up and I’ve never seen Tires, I don’t really care about his comedy but I like him as a very vocal ND ambassador. He leans into it and wears it on his sleeve.

As for his comments, I think people are being overly sensitive. I also don’t care how women dress in the gym.

I'm not offended by the content of the line but it also wasn't a good joke. I'm all for rude/un-pc/vulgar comedy but "whores, amiright" isn't a joke. it's just trying to get a laugh out of saying something shocking, which was peak comedy in like third grade.

Also, (a) shut the fuck up Shane don't ruin the gym for me and (b) how incredibly stale is this observation? I've seen the Call on Me music video, it's not like we've been wearing grey sweatpants to the gym for decades.

Finally, as a fan of college football, I'm not sure I'm in any position to comment on what anyone wears to the gym. After all, I spend hours a week following the exploits of a bunch of 17-22 year olds clad in spandex.

I really like Dan Levy, but he also said in that diatribe that women were superior to men. After that, I wasn't interested in whatever he had to say. Talk about offensive. And also incredibly stupid. Claiming one gender is superior to the other makes it kind of hard to be offended by a joke. Imagine saying straight people were superior to gays. White people are superior to people of any color. Rich people are superior to poor people. When you say "women are superior human beings", you open the door to all those other things and you can't be offended when they are said.
Weird thing for him to say as someone attracted to the inferior gender? 🥴

The joke is the contradiction - some women go to the gym dressed in a way to guarantee they attract attention and then feign absolute shock when men actually look at them.

The joke lands, for better or worse, because there's some truth to it.

Its admittedly tougher for some older gen X and Boomers to understand all the outrage over seemingly silly things like a comedian on a tv show. And the blowing it up into saying it encourages rape and sexual assualt.

We had a book in my house growing up that you could just buy at the store called "Truly Tasteless Jokes". The chapters were broken up by Blacks, Italians, Irish, Polish, Jews, Mexicans and Gays. And it was perfectly normal to have that in the living room of a regular suburban house. Our house was two of those chapters.

"Women dress for attention but I'm not allowed to give them attention" is a tired joke though. Dave Chappel was doing the "why are you dressed for the job then" joke back in the early 2000s and it felt old then. The only thing more predictable and tired than the joke is the reaction to it from both sides.

The pearl clutching from liberals is predictably self-harming. They really need to understand that Gillis is as close to a friendly face you're going to get from a large swath of middle America. He's friends with a lot of those people he's on stage with on SNL. Despite being "canceled" previously and being associated with Rogan, he's been very intentional about being politically center and dunking on both sides. Trying to turn him into an enemy because he doesn't agree with every part of your insane ideology is typically stupid.

That being said, the thing I'm always more disheartened by is the reaction to the reaction. A good number of posters in here are acting like they are being personally attacked because Gillis told a joke that is getting a negative response, saying that the women who didn't like the joke are "5s" or that the majority of women at gyms are dressed like whores. Others are excusing the joke by feigning like Gillis is speaking some moral truth to women to enact change. "God forbid Shane shed light on the licentiousness in our culture." as if the whole point of the joke isn't his frustration at being denied the right to objectify those women.

I like Gillis's comedy a lot. He has many stand up bits that are killer. I think the joke was a mild miss (I thought the line about the shorts being the same color as fishing bait was clever), but jokes miss all the time.

I think we can express opinions without using denigrating terms, especially on a Notre Dame forum. Idk about y'all but my priest would not be pleased if I used those words.

I don't think your priest would approve of women in very short and tight yoga shorts on bottom, and basically sports bras on top either. He didn't even call these women whores, he just said they dress like them. He wasn't wrong.

Gillis would probably be the 1st to admit that his opening monologues in his last 2 SNL hosting roles were bad. Some of his skits were funny in his last SNL appearance (“Coupla Beers”) but this past Saturday bombed IMO.

this was a great bit on Alabama football that I think we can all appreciate:

I haven't watched the whole show, but I watched 4-5 skits as Shorts on Youtube. I thought they were good by modern SNL standards, nothing really bad except the Cop skit. The Cop skit was just a giant stereotype to cater to the New York crowd. Cop "pulls over" guy, cop assaults guy for no reason, rinse and repeat. We don't need to reinforce the stereotype, social media does enough of that. People need to talk to cops more when they're not getting into trouble and breaking the law, they'll find out that most of them are decent people trying to do their job.

Gillis is funny. His comedy probably hasn't for everyone. He was 100% correct about women at the gym.

What are we devout Muslims now? Who gives a shit how they dress. I love going to the gym more than ever.
I swore if a woman ever entered the gym wearing navy blue shorts that do not stick to the skin she was getting a marriage proposal on the spot. That was 6 years ago and it has never come up.

I think that was Chris Rock when he said you are wearing the uniform.
