The riskiest financial bet you can make right now is a P2 school signing toolsy/project 5 star QB that expects to start right away

Underwood, now Faizon Brandon. Lagway before that.

The reason they have a 5 next to their name is not their ability to start as a freshman.
There's a lot of truth to this. You'd better be damn sure that that 18 year old is going to actually be your best option, especially in the transfer portal era where you can get a vet to bridge a gap year at any position. Freshman and early sophomore Brady Quinn and Jimmy Clausen paled in comparison to the upper classmen versions.

Such a red flag IMO to deal with a kid who says "pay me X and I demand to play." Proceed with caution. You have to be here 3 years anyway. Team first, always.

Like with Tennessee, Brandon cannot complete a forward pass and takes a billion sacks a game, what was Fall Camp like? You’re just getting him hurt + zapping his confidence. He didn’t even play well against Ga Tech!

Did anyone else see the message board genius post where they picked faizon brandon over Arch Manning after their first game. I laughed real hard. What 4 games later benched.

Shit is actually kinda sad

There are some commentary on their side that he is actually just so stupid he can't learn the basics of playing QB / reading defense and the coaches all want to play Tommy Carr because he's the opposite. And the entire reason they can't is because of the $$ allocated to Underwood.

Sunk cost theory. Boosters care enough to dump their dollars into the program but don't want the coaches to do what's best to help the program they're supporting improve? You made a bad investment. Time to move on IMO.

Or don't idgaf, fuck michigan.

Saw on X yesterday that no QB has won a Super Bowl since 1990 with a Wonderlic score below 22, which is 2 points above the median intelligence for a US adult. Certainly matters.

I've always said what's between the ears is more important than having a cannon for an arm.

I'm super happy to watch this tire fire continue, but I don't think this is boosters wanting a specific guy to play. Larry Ellison certainly understands a sunk cost. I think it's coaches (and more so GMs these days) being afraid to explain how they can be so spectacularly wrong in eval. Because the next time they go hat in hand to Larry and Co they have to know that question is coming.

I mean that's fair, too. Whatever it is, it's incompetent one way or the other. And I sure hope it continues!

Oh yeah Larry Ellison DGAF, he wasn't even the one who wanted Underwood it was his girlfriend. The issue is the politics of benching a guy that you, as a program, have allocated so much money to... if Tommy Carr *doesnt* work or Underwood goes somewhere else and pans out you start having different conversations. Not dissimilar from the Book/Wimbush conversation.

Agreed on all points, and I revel in their discomfort. The thing that the college football world is going to have to get used to is that the QB position obeys a power law distribution. You have to invest millions into unproven high school players just to have a seat at the table. To no small degree hitting is a numbers game. The transfer portal isn't much different. Ironically, Ellison would completely understand this point as this is how Silicon Valley operates. Higher education decidedly does not, hence the handwringing and lamentations.

It's a shame they are on a BYE.

Let's see who's the bigger pile of average next week: The Meatchickens or the Iowa State Nittany Lions.
