People in this fanbase are going to worry and complain about everything. There's no getting around it. For all of the reverence Lou Holtz gets as we enter 2026, I can't begin to imagine what it all would have looked like in a digital age. Doesn't matter who the offensive coordinator is, everyone sitting at home in their living rooms is going to know more. That's just sports culture and human nature.
I will say this: Notre Dame can do everything within their power to protect this asset that is Marcus Freeman, and I believe that they will and they should. It guarantees nothing. Marcus Freeman is going to be like every person on the face of this Earth in the end: he's going to do what is best for himself and act on his own behalf to whatever best benefits him. We have him because Brian Kelly did the exact same thing, and if we're all being honest, did we really know what we had in Marcus Freeman when we got him? I don't think most of us did. Great DC, charismatic young dude who recruited with the best of them, but this? I don't think so. We had reservations about him being a first time head coach and all the rest of it. We know now, and because we know, we're afraid to lose him.
So I think it comes down to how you wish to live your fandom. If you think it's the hope that kills you and you want to wait around for bad things to happen, it's hard for anyone to stop you other than a therapist. Maybe a really good ass kicking. When shit goes bad, you can say "I told you so" and ask for apologies because this coach left or ND didn't make the playoff, etc. I think it's kind of cunty, but that's just me. I choose to enjoy the ride when it comes to sports. I've seen one Natty, one Super Bowl, one World Series, six NBA Championships and three Stanley Cups in my lifetime. I can say that those were not even my favorite teams of the ones I support. I love this 2025 team and as much as it sucks we've seen them play their last game, I'll remember the ride more than anything else. The second half against Purdue, Price's kickoff return against SC, kicking Pitt's ass and Narduzzi's stupid face. Eventually, this program is going to win a Natty again, and when they do it's going to be great. That's going to be a hell of a ride. By February, we're all going to be fixing for spring ball and figuring out depth charts and recruiting classes. It goes on, man, again and again.
I hope Freeman has a Frank Beamer run at Notre Dame with more championships and less alcoholic defensive coordinators (I love Bud Foster, but dude had issues). I hope he wants that for himself, too, but there is absolutely zero telling what the future holds. He's here now and I'm going to enjoy that ride for as long as it lasts. I think it's going to be a long time but I am not about to dwell on a timeline.
Rally.
