I think the way the committee has it now is perfect. Now, assuming it goes our way and 'bama AND BYU lose, then ND is back up to 9 and I say 'bama is out. I personally believe it's not so much about getting punished for the CCG but more so because now you're losing to a team you beat and the CCG is essentially a playoff game so I think 'bama is out, esp. if they get boat raced by GA (hopefully, they do) and then outside the G5 team (which could be Tulane), that leaves Texas as the last team in at #11 behind Miami at #10.
That would be getting right IMO because Vanderbilt, altho' a strong resume, had two shots at 2 top 14 teams and failed to win either so I say they're the first team out.
I agree that we should go to the 16-team field. I really don't think there's nearly as much controversy at the #13 to #16 spots with 2- and 3-loss teams. The 16-team field would have been easy peasy this year with no controversies as far as I can see.
And then yes, 100%, 86 the AQ and also say the CCG - What's the purpose of them at this point? The entire field might as well start playing right away in the first round of 16 team and as kind of a reward for being seeded 1-4, those teams would be pitted against the 13-16 teams.
I believe these days conferences are more about a kind of guaranteed set # of challenging conference opponents and also they're then not worried about playing OOC teams like ND or TX playing OSU as they'll want those matchups more for SOS and in-season battle tests that could help these teams get in. Who wants a CCG where it could be the 2nd match of 3 total matches with the same, for example, SEC teams. Stupid.
IMO, there are an increasing number of non CCG at-large teams qualifying for the 16-team field so also don't have the 13th game and get an extra week to rest, like ND, so there are a lot of similar situations to the Irish's situation so again, I say 86 the CCGs - There's no need for them in the current system.
Done!
Also, with a system like this, since the conference teams are now more willing to play non-conference games against top P4 conference teams and ND, I think ND should leverage it's strong brand and current NBC contract (where NBC also has Big10 games) to get a Big10 tie up where ND has 2-4 games against Big10 team every year, similar to ACC deal (that also enables ND to get USC at least in some years, if not annually). NBC I would think would love that so ND and conference TV right deals could go uninterrupted. And then keep ACC tie up or kill that and do more Clemson deals with top ACC teams only, so include similar tie up with Miami. ND also needs to ensure there are top P4 games on their annual slate or it could bit us in some years. For example, next year's schedule is shit and won't be helpful for SOS for making the 2026 CFP.
