Kelly probably wants an upfront lump sum, that way he can earn more money by taking another job. With an offset, he's hard-capped at $50m for the next 5 years. This way, he gets a big windfall now and can add additional earnings (say a 5 year, $40m deal).

I suspect the morals clause is mostly BS, whether the infidelity is true or not. No program is going to invoke a morals clause over something that isn't criminal or an NCAA sanction. If they were to invoke it, they'd be essentially blackballed by the clients of the better agents for that hiring cycle. Is Lane Kiffin really going to take a job where cheating on his wife might cost him guaranteed money?

He isn’t the first to hint at this being the case. Idk if we’ll ever hear the truth.

For those who don’t know the rumor - he allegedly cheated on Paqui with a realtor a few years ago, which is why she filed for divorce (before quickly rescinding). In effect this is legalized black mail lol.
Except HE filed for divorce, not her. Given the availability of laches in Louisiana, it would also be hard to use the morals clause on something that has been known since February 2023. If it was so morally objectionable, they should have exercised the clause when they found out, not 2 years later to justify firing him because they weren't winning.

This is big college football we’re talking about here.

Everyone knows what happened, but LSU could have easily been saving any ammunition (not just this thing) in the event that they needed an early exit strategy.

Very easy to say “in light of new information we have just been provided…” and then exercise any morality clause.

Also easy to threaten BK with “we’ll go to war over this, and even if you win your full $50M buyout, it’s gonna be a long, ugly, and VERY public process.”

What a strange title for this thread. The glaze about what Kelly did for our program is weird. Is he a perfect person? By no means, but he left ND in a better position than when he got here.
That's nice but he he shit on us on the way out the door and fed the national media the narrative that we were holding him back. Leaving is one thing, undercutting us with his talk of different aisles and "alignment" is something else altogether. He doesn't love or appreciate us so I see no reason we should feel any differently towards him.

He brought us stability but he fucked us in several big games with his bitchass mentality. I don't forgive him for:
-2011 USF
-2012 NCG
-2015 Stanford
-The entire 2016 season
-2017 Miami (the one time I've truly been embarrassed to be a ND fan)
-2018 playoffs
-2019 Michigan
-2020 ACCCG
-2021 Cincy

After digging further, my cursory review of Louisiana law was inaccurate. LA doesn't recognize common law laches as a defense (which would have almost assuredly barred a breach claim in this situation), they have a prescriptive period, which for contract law is 10 years. Could they use that clause to try to get out of it? Sure. But the information is already public for anyone who will actually care about it, so I'm not sure that publicity really moves the needle. It's more likely to spur action from the "I don't want to deal with this" part of BK's personality, which I think we can all agree is a pretty large part of who he is.

Not sure that would fly. LSU would be asked to show the new information. I wouldn't think Kelly will stay in that part of the country. Most of the publicity is going to be in Louisiana so he'll be sheltered to an extent. Given he cares more about himself than anyone else, it seems he couldn't care as long as he gets his money.

My neighbor said he kicked BK out of a game at GVSU back when he was still refereeing. Takes a lot for a head football coach to get ran from a game.

I also want to throw it out there that, in addition to the "ND fans are mad we took their coach" stuff we heard when we tried to tell people who BK was and is, LSU fans were largely unbothered by Denbrock leaving because they claimed Sloan was more responsible for Daniels' evolution than Denbrock was, and Sloan would work the same magic on Nussmeier.

Oops x2.

Will BK get the Franklin treatment where he gets to go on GameDay and have people cry about how this 'isn't fair"? I don't know if my sense of humor could take that hit. This whole situation is such a glorious shit show.

I’m guessing no. They hate BK. Everyone does.

I legitimately think nobody in his profession likes him. Some tolerate him, but that’s the max.

Saban is a good diplomat and doesn’t like to spark controversy, so he will speak nicely when his name is brought up Saturday, but it will end there.

The Internet is literally a Mardi Gras right now of people from all fanbases celebrating. He was universally loathed, even by programs he coached.

I’m all about beating USC in the end and Kelly got our first win after Willingham getting drubbed by over 24 points three times in a row and then Charlie coming remarkably close once and parlaying a loss into a five year extension. He rebounded well after 2016. He never had a game changing level QB on par with the other top teams.
His record both at ND and LSU were pretty good but we all know we all want championships now. Freeman is one loss away from the same record as LSU. Shouldn’t happen but if we blow it against any of the remaining teams we should be embarrassed.
I don’t like the way he left but he beat usc a lot.
He was a success at Grand Valley State, Central Michigan, Cincy, ND and a winning record and a gutsy win over Saban and Bama on two point ballsy conversion. I like a coach who loses his shit on the sidelines. Woody, Bo, Lou?!
I’m just not pissed at him and he worked along time in this business to make the big payday. You never know if he could have turned it around. No doubt losing Denbrock hurt.

Wonder what Manti would have to say?

Pate acting like he’s revealing groundbreaking info. This is EXACTLY the same guy who was at ND. The one who barely knew his players, didn’t develop relationships with coaches, and couldn’t be bothered to recruit. Shame on LSU for not doing their due diligence on him. Their mistake was the best thing that could’ve happened to us! Pay up, LSU!

This is me for a second time this week stating that Pate is an ass clown. He acts like he's the smartest guy in the room when 1 out of 10 of his predictions hit.

Yeah. Franklin was a smug son of a bitch and a little too full of himself, but he did know how to play the game for the most part and was good at handling the media. To be fair to him, I also heard he was really good with fans and stuff. BK just always comes across as a snob who is gracing people with his presence and tolerates being among them for as long as he has to.

Gameday does those on the field remote interviews with coaches around the country and man they did BK once and he was just so stiff and unpleasant. Franklin was good at those. Kiffin is the best at them. Not everyone has to like or be good at that stuff, but BK let his resentment for it all show. Like it was beneath him.

If LSU couldn’t get Freeman then Kelvin Shephard (Lions DC) might have similar appeal

The BK discussion seems to have reached the "Parents asking about your ex from 5 years ago who you had a contentious breakup with but appreciate the time you spent together and are glad you're in the relationship you are now and don't really care to talk about the ex".
Very specific!
