But then they validated with a dominant win over IU, a double digit win over the SEC champion, and a win over the B1G runner up. People did question ND going into the playoffs, the board's second favorite coach famously did, and that's fine. We answered the bell. The ball is in IU's court.

For the record, I just don't like Cig. I've not questioned his coaching ability and haven't mentioned anything about IU or how good they may or may not be. I just hate Cig and wish him ill (on the field), simple as. I care little about the IU team in general and haven't watched them play and don't plan to really.

Not dogging on ND just giving an example of a damn good team that had a pretty easy schedule but proved they belonged when foot met leather in the playoffs, but you can’t say that schedule last year was anything special until the playoffs.

I didn’t undercut anything. I have watched every damn ND game for over 40 years. All I said was the schedule was weak until the playoffs. They proved who they were and that they belonged

Admittedly have not watched Indiana at all outside of playoffs last year, but I give Cignetti a lot of credit for Indiana being relevant and getting them to the playoffs. With that said, he’s 1-2 in big games with that win coming at Oregon this year. Until that win his biggest win was against 7-5 Michigan and really hadn’t proved anything at all outside of being able to win games you should win as a good team. I would like to see Indiana repeat that Oregon performance before I designate Cignetti as a top tier coach and Indiana a legitimate contender. I see no reason why IU can’t be a top 3-4 program in the new Big Ten as they’ll rarely ever have to play more than 2 of Oregon/USC/Michigan/Penn State/Ohio State in a season. They play literally nobody in noncon so 10 win seasons should be expected.

ND had a top 20 SoS in the regular season. iu was 42nd. Schedule wasn’t a joke, and was significantly stronger than IU’s. If you want to say IU wasn’t an easier schedule than SMU, fine, that’s backed up by metrics. But ND isn’t a comparison.

Disparaging ND’s schedule compared to IU’s with the username “ndfanatic” is INSANE.

They beat Oregon, full stop that’s a great win. They opened with Old Dominion, Kennesaw, Indiana St, Illinois, and Iowa.

I'm 95% with you in this thread, but when you say a schedule with twelve FBS opponents, including ten that are P4 or otherwise ranked, is a joke, it does feel like a bit of an exaggeration. And I do realize strength of schedule is different than quality of scheduling, but as to the latter, we would've had seven ranked opponents in the 2024 regular season if USC and FSU were their normal selves and Miami didn't run away scared.

I respect the job Cignetti has done, and he’s obviously a hell of a coach. A classic program builder that knows how to take those “middling” guys, develop them, put them in the right spots, and then punch above their weight collectively. And giving a guy like that some NIL resources and the transfer portal makes a bottom-dweller overhaul happen even faster.

But whenever I watch IU (or any Cignetti-coached team in the future), I will first always remember the way he coached like an absolute coward against ND in the playoff. No excuse to not be pedal-to-the-metal the entire game after Love’s TD, but my guy was coaching like he was in a 1959, “Game of the Century” style defensive struggle, punting from past midfield and shit.

I really don't know how good he is, but it appears he's not bad. As Lax said, there is a difference between last years version and this year. I still think a lot of what you saw last year was his way of getting the players to change mentalities and believe in themselves. His pre and post game pressers and interviews, however, don't do it for me. He's arrogant, and for all the talk he talks, he crapped out against ND last year in pretty epic fashion. Talking on Game Day about "kicking the shit" out of ranked teams and all that. Only to coach conservative and timid when it was time to hold nothing back. That playoff game against ND was the biggest game he'd ever coached as a head coach and he rode side saddle.

I have a hard time understanding why people can't separate one thing from the other. I'm not at all questioning what he's accomplished as a head coach to this point. I just think he's a dick. Not exactly earth shattering when it comes to the typical people in the industry.

It really does seem that people have a hard time understanding what Jigg and I are saying: we just don't like Cig and think he's an arrogant prick who is full of shit. It has nothing to do with his coaching ability. Just because he is a good coach doesn't mean I have to like him. I loathe Kirby Smart and he is one hell of a coach. Those are two separate things.

Be that as it may, they were underdogs in that game and nobody thought they'd win. I give them full credit for going to Oregon and winning. Oregon hadn't lost a regular season game in two years. They're tough at home and it is a crazy environment more often than not. There is something to be said for this.

Their schedule is what it is. You go up and down a lot of these threads, and everyone is either overrated or playing a weak schedule. There are elements of truth and credence to this discussions, but at the end of the day, everyone has to play who they play and get on with it. Any Notre Dame fan has likely had a discussion with non Notre Dame friend and family having to vouch for ND's schedule. These schedules are set years in advance, and believe me, I'd love for nothing more than ND to make their lives easier down the line. Indiana seems to be doing this now and I don't fault them for it.

We can sit here and dissect every team's schedule, twisting ourselves into mental pretzels to have everything fit a certain narrative of our choosing. The fact remains that Indiana Football has been perennial garbage for decades upon decades, and now they're not. I give them props for what they're doing, which they were not doing prior to this current era of NIL and The Portal. If IU wins out and manages to beat Ohio State, it's going to be interesting what the narrative sounds like then.

I've said it many times now but will again...Cig reminds me a lot of my college coach. "Tough guy" who talks mad shit..."I recruit GD F-ing beer drinkers, F a milk drinker", "we'll play your ass in the GD F-ing parking lot", "Gamer!?! F Gamer, you can take Gamer and shove it up your f-ing ass (he said that to Rich Maloney scUM's baseball coach lol)"...I could go on and on... I don't think the dude could say a pray without dropping the F bomb.

But when it came time to fly out to the CWS every year (in this case the CFP), he'd no show when the stage was largest. In Cig's case it was last year's soft coaching vs ND, in our case tough guy coach literally just didn't show and we flew out without a coach (every year).

That is how I see it. Great coach who knows how to lift a program, but when time to put your money where your big mouth is...well, we'll see...
