I think Aneyas would be silly to leave after this year. With Love and Price gone it's a strong possibility that he's the RB #1 or 1a next year. He's already shown to be a patient runner, he can block, and he's proven he can be a receiving weapon. He's got all the tools to be the every down back.

I might be an outsider on this, but I'm not so certain Price is gone after this year. It's not like he doesn't have NIL $ coming in. Why not assume the role as the BIG dog for a year and enhance his overall positioning in the draft?
Because RBs have a short shelf life so if you can expect to be drafted somewhat high you take it. Price is projected to be picked in rounds 2-3 so another year in college won’t help much and might even hurt some.

O'Malley is just guessing but did say he thought we would lose 4 running backs for next year - Love, Price, Payne and Williams. The question was if they thought next year's leading rusher would be a transfer - he thought it would be. I know Williams was hurt but I can't believe there isn't any role for him. Dude was a stud late in the year last year. He was the 3rd down back!
If a guy is wanting to transfer because he is injured and cant really contribute or gain the game experience that the others have gained who werent injured but wants to transfer because of it, he has to have a screw loose. He isnt going to find a better line to run behind than ND.

I could see a possibility where our leading rusher next year is a transfer, the question is who?
What top RB would everybody want to come in (And has a legit chance of getting flipped) to take the spot over Williams or someone else? It's got to be a young back with talent that wants a better OL to run behind.

Someone mentioned Baugh from UF as a possibility, I don’t recall if there was real potential smoke behind that or just spitballing but that would be a huge get. That kid is a stud.

For us, getting a good young transfer RB poses the same admissions challenges as getting a good young transfer QB, with a difference being that good QBs often play five years, while good RBs often go after three. Personally I'd just work with the RBs we've already got.

Throw the bag at Price, but assuming he goes, Williams transferring out b/c he's stuck behind two guys who'll be gone next year doesn't make a lot of sense.

He will have his degree and is a legit day 2 draft prospect. He is t coming back

That's my hope, that Williams is #1 or #1a. Just throwing out the hypothetical.

There are emotional and competitive reasons to come back, but from a logical and financial standpoint, it really doesn't make sense. The only logical and financial reason to stay would be if he thinks he can massively improve his draft stock. With Kiper having him as RB3, that seems unlikely. So unless he gets feedback on needing to show being able to carry a larger workload or needing to show more as a pass catcher, he has essentially shown all he is going to show, isn't going to massively improve, and needs to keep tread on the tires.

Given our history of taking the best players we played against the previous year, maybe Hollywood Smothers or Dylan Riley. Or maybe Mekhi Hughes since it looks like it isn't working out at Oregon.

Williams has a Skatteboo vibe to him.

I’m holding out some hope for Kedron Young recovery/ development. He has a physical dimension that might have helped out short yardage issues this year

I think Nolan James ends up our #1 back, but we’ll see. Curious to see which freshman ends up with meaningful carries bc they are both too good to sit.

Have always thought James has Kyren Williams vibes. A little underrated as a recruit - probably because of measurables - and maybe not going to walk in and blow you away as a freshman. But if you are named the best high school football player in a mid-sized or larger state, you're probably a dude.

Next year is MFs best chance yet to have a special season. I just don’t see him risking it by starting a RB that is not currently a high-level starter in the P4. I think James is a solid #2a with Young #2b. This staff likely needs to bring in 2 WRs that are currently starting at other P4 schools too. This offseason will be the wildest in NDs history.

I think aneyas is a good player but he thrived in situations where the opposing team wasn’t defending/expecting him as an option to get the ball. That’s a big difference from being lead back

I just don’t think he has the talent to be the lead back compared to what we’re used to or bringing in.

Cool if he stays but if Nolan has passed him I get why he’d want to leave.

I think if price isn’t back (almost a lock for nfl) you go get a stud portal player and then have Nolan young and the two try frosh compete for the other reps. You may not need a transfer but if you can get a top player it makes sense.

I think it is an absurd notion that ND will bring in a transfer at RB next year. There are 3 starter-level players cooling their heels in back of the best two backs in the country and the Irish freshmen next year are the best two-back recruiting haul in recent memory. And we had the number 1 HS back in the country on hand to watch ND gain 300+ on the ground leaning ND and he’s now leaning toward the good guys. There isn’t a transfer out there who would be guaranteed to be in the two deep. This is silly.

Would it be silly if it was Nick Singleton?

I have no insider knowledge, but if the 5 for 5 rule goes through, it's not impossible.

Agreed completely. It’s one thing to think that Osborne or Walton come in and compete for the most amount of carries, but I think it’s a bit asinine to spend capital on a portal RB and sour good will that we have with the pipeline we have had for the better part of the last decade at the RB position

He’s averaging 3.6 yards a carry this year and has less than 300 yards over 7 games. So yeah, it would be silly to piss off the current roster by bringing him on. And it wouldn’t inspire future recruits either.

If Singleton gets an extra year through the new eligibility rules you take him and run with him to South Bend
Absolutely, that's staff is clueless and runs him like an old school Fullback. He would be elite in out offense and look much more like last year's version of Singleton.

I've always felt Allen was the better back of those 2. Singleton is overrated

Guessing:

Kedren has been injury plagued in his first two years and has never looked like a frontrunner for short yardage despite his massive build.

A. Williams served an excellent role last year but this year (injury) hasn't done anything.

N. James' name keeps being brought up in a glowing fashion. Not in a perfunctory way but casually dropped as someone who has impressed the staff over and over again.

Walton and Osborne both look like studs.

If I were guessing: One of Williams/Young will transfer but I hope not. N. James will get 1a or 1b carries. One of the other freshmen will be the other 1 designee. My hope is all of them stay and fight to make the best RB room 2 years in a row (maybe 3).

Solid player. Tough kid. Not even in the stratosphere of Love or Price. Lacks elite speed.
Short yardage? yep. All around back? Don't think so.

ND should be able to get better.
