Our power rating generally went up after this weekend, but we got jumped on a few sites bc of strong showings against sub-par competition by Oregon and IU. Still top 4 on essentially every rating system, with OSU #1.

We are so fuckin' due to win one against OSU. We tend to catch them when they're at the strongest and we are heavy on injuries or deficient at positions.

For Lou Holtz's teams, the path to the National Championship went through Miami. They had to slay the Hurricanes before the could be champions. For Marcus Freeman's teams, the path goes through Ohio State.

Wouldn't have it any other way.

Be interested to see how the committee ranks us and how much they lean into these metrics.

Here are the most important things to track as the season continues. It doesn't guarantee anything but ND is trending up massively, especially if they can improve their kick game. These are industry-referenced metrics and at least filter into the committee room.

Yeah and the Two most predictive so far this year are Sargain and DokterEntropy - who both have us at 3 currently.

Looks like we'd be a couple point dog to our 2024 team at this point FWIW.

How many teams will be riding a 10 game win streak to finish up the season? One? Two maybe? If we get up each week like it’s a playoff game we roll out opponents and Freeman understand the benefit of style points. We would have 10 dominant wins with two old very close one fluke losses.
How many team do we think will be in contention for the playoffs with an African American head coach? Franklin is done and VA will be long gone.

If we are at 12 rn we are not gonna move up too much even if we win all our remaining games. We could get leapt by other teams with more challenging schedules

If you’re at 12 at the end of the year then you’re not getting in obviously. The Irish being left out due to a S Fla, Tulane, Memphis would be a travesty.
Thankfully none of these polls mean anything and the real one comes out in a few weeks.

Amazing how the SEC bias is. Im not saying ND Is a worldbeater right now but Bama has played one good team in Georgia. FSU was a paper tiger. Unranked SC kicked their tails all game except the last 4 minutes. Ranked #4???
Missouri was a product of media rankings. Oklahoma is just turning into nothing at all. Same with Texas. When you struggle all game against an unranked opponent, you are not a worldbeater.
Texas A&M is by far the best team in the SEC and I would take ND vs them round 2.
Look at the remaining schedule for Bama. Easy street

Didn’t they say this past offseason that the CFP would consider advanced metrics more in their deliberations?

They're adding an analytical SoR component. They've always evaluated that, subjectively, but this the 1st time they're trying to quantify it using data analytics.

That said, they've always used their own models, but this is a new, more robust piece of the picture for them.

We fell just a tick over the bye week.

Sagarin:
Ohio State
Oregon
Indiana
ND

Dokter Entropy:
Indiana
Ohio State
Notre Dame
Oregon

In terms of performance to date rather than ability, the latter ranking makes more sense to me.

Oregon is a pretender. Their signature win is a squeaker against a terrible PSU team. Keep winning, keep moving up. The sediment will sink as the season continues, making way for the ascent of the Irish.

Bama has OU, LSU and the iron bowl remaining. We have pitt, navy and scrubs. I dont think we should be the ones to call out their remaining schedule which is definitely much more difficult than ND’s.

True but for example LSU is a name but there is nothing to support making it a better team than Pitt. They are 2 spots away from each other in SP+, which still includes historical data + before Pitt’s QB change. On the field, Pitt has been objectively better.

When team A is highly ranked in the preseason and ends up dropping, the teams that beat team A still benefit from its preseason ranking. Teams that beat Texas and PSU are still treated as having a "big" win, because it seemed big at the time, or whatever.

Looks like it’s more IU outperforming again in a blow out. Still top 5 essentially everywhere.

I don't understand why the rankings love Oregon so much...
Is it just that the rankings also love Indiana and that's Oregon's only loss?

Agreed ...Not to mention Bama beat Ga, Vandy, Mizzu, Tenn and USC in back to back to back weeks. ND CANT SAY MUCH ABOUT Bama right now if we are all being honest with ourselves.

I think that's true more for AP and Cosches poll voters than it is for the CFP committee, specifically because the CFP committee only evaluates and starts releasing rankings in November. There will likely be some serious shifting in the AP after the initial CFP rankings because they will want to make theirs match the answer in the back of the book.

I don't know why everyone is talking about Bama. If we get left out for an SEC team it wouldn't likely be Bama -who is likely in regardless- it would likely be Vandy or Texas or OU.

I agree to some extent but OU is possibly the best opponent has left, and i do still think LSU is probably a better team than Pitt overall assuming they dont quit on BK down the stretch which is very possible. Auburn has also lost 4 games, all close, to top 25 teams. They are better than maybe anyone left on NDs schedule with the exception of Pitt which would probably be a toss up.

I also think regardless of what happens a 10-2 ND team is in. The whole landscape of college football has changed. It's all about entertainment (PMac on GameDay) and money. ND is good for both, I'll die on the hill that there is a zero % chance a 10-2 ND gets snubbed.

I generally support the advanced stats that like Oregon. Signature wins are largely irrelevant when the conversation is about most formidable teams. ND hasn't beat anybody currently ranked, yet we're clearly up there with Ohio State and Indiana.
