How far did we drop after Northern Illinois last year? I feel like we're a little lower than this time last year

Some Updated Computer Power Rankings this morning:

Sargarin: 8
Dokter Entropy: 14
TeamRankings.com: 12
FPI: 13
Donchess Inference: 8
This seems about right. It's kinda funny that the stats nerds, talking heads, bro media (barstool, etc.) all seem to still be bullish on Notre Dame while we are all running around with our hair on fire.

I do think ND has an opportunity to do the Clemson circa 2015-2020 thing where the regular season is basically an opportunity to get things figured out. The schedule is not daunting at all. Its entirely plausible that by November Notre Dame is sitting around the 10 spot. Its also plausible there are 4 losses and people are screaming for Freeman's head

I'll only call for Freeman's head if Ash is still employed come next year.
(Barring the defense going on some Legion of Boom tier run for the rest of this year)

Looks like we got a BIG jump in the advanced metrics, as Arkansas was looked as a fringe top 25 team and we were generally a 0-5 pt implied favorite by the computers.

Ranking after week 5:
Sargarin: 3
FPI: 6
Dokter Entropy: 4
Teamrankings.com: 5

Right now looks like we’d be 10+ point favorites in every remaining games. Maybe higher.

Sagarin has us at #3 and FPI at #6. If we win out we will almost certainly have a higher ranking in advanced stats than in the polls. The CFP committee presumably cares more about that.

Remained at 21 in the Coaches Poll
I think that might still be from last week.

Teams in front of us generally took care of business. The ones who lost were within the Top 10 and weren't going to drop that far.

Conference play is just starting and teams are going to start dropping. Ultimately none of these polls matter, we will see what the committee does at the first ranking. I’d wager they have ND higher than the polls if ND keeps winning

Looking ahead, we're gonna need a lot of help to make the playoffs. We would absolutely argue that PSU/IU shouldn't make it at 10-2 if they lost to the only two good teams they faced, and IU already has a better victory than we could possibly have given the rest of our schedule.

USC hosting Mich next week is basically the equivalent to a must win for us. At best, they could finish 9-3 this season (losses to us and Oregon), which might not even get them ranked at season end. Personally, I still am not gonna root for that. They can beat Mich (lessor of two evils), but then i hope they finish 6-6 or worse.

Despite the same 3-1 record and lopsided head to head loss, Alabama is ranked significantly ahead of FSU #10 vs #18.

So many mediocre SEC teams in there. Anyone remember what happened in the Ole Miss/Arkansas game?

I don't know about "mediocre" as an adjective I'd use for these SEC teams. That, in fact, scares me vis-a-vis Championship selection.

Here's a scenario: Four champions + One "Little" = FIVE, ----> SEVEN left. Say the following are all 10-2 (or better) in the SEC: A&M, Ole Miss, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and ???(TN, Vandy, OK, LSU) pick any combo getting to "6". Now, given the team-on-team, is that even possible? Right now I don't know, but maybe. But if so, what if a champ plus Five more get in? If Six SEC then there is only space for one other team (ex. OSU/OR)(and us). If Five SEC, there is only room for two other teams (ex. OSU/OR, plus IN?, PSU?, UM? ... or number two BIG12 ISU/TTech or ...?)

I don't like it. Too many SEC teams not only look like good teams but are all highly rated already. Will they really cannibalize each other effectively down to a lot of three loss teams? And will BIG12 still have only one? And ACC (which is more likely.) Five SEC plus Three B1G plus ACC plus Big12 (only one) plus "little" is what we're probably hoping for. By the way, if "darlings" like Vandy go 10-2, I'm betting they're in. A second place Big12 2-loss ISU probably too. (let alone a 1-loss ISU.)

Too complex for now ... I need a lot of cannibalism and A&M and Miami not crapping the bed, I think. If both of them roll to top 5-8 status, then we don't look like a two-loss team even though we are.

Personally don’t see any path to the playoff.

I know I’m wrong, but there will be too many teams that finish with 2 or less losses that have at least one marquee win, and then you will also have Penn State’s obligatory free pass.

The end result will also depend on their losses (quality of loss + when they occur). We will have a strong edge in both of these.

Agree. That's what I mean. Those SEC teams are ranked way too high. If they start to knock each other off, we will see how the cookie crumbles.

Every time an SEC team loses a conference game—no matter the team—it just proves the greatness of the SEC. Circulus in probando. You cannot argue with somebody using an endless loop, no matter how often the loop is interrupted.

SEC had 3 two loss teams and 4 three loss teams last year. I tend to think the SEC is more competitive not less this year. Nobody had Ole Miss losing to UK, Bama losing to Vandy and OU, A&M collapse etc etc. Cannibalism will happen again.

There is no use fretting about something weeks down the line. Just let the schedule play out.
