Still not sure why we're in a hurry to move Knapp off LT.

He was very solid for a true freshman last year having never played the position, and the staff clearly loves him which bodes well for his future development. As far as I know, he's taken all reps at LT with the 1s during camp. And we're moving him off the position for a guy who seemingly has trouble staying healthy (CJ), so we can accommodate a guy who's never taken a live rep in a game (Lambert)?

It just seems kind of...crazy to me.

I can explain why some of us have the idea in our heads.

Knapp was really poor as a pass blocker for the first half of the season. He got better but was still susceptible to getting beat. You don't want that in a LT. I hope he's gotten way better and puts this discussion to rest by playing mistake-free. His frame isn't ideal for LT and I'm always open to having another Zach Martin but the odds aren't in his favor. It would seem far more likely one of our 6'6 - 6'7 prototypical tackles would take over that position.

But it hasn't happened yet and I trust Rudolph. Given the above, I don't think you can fault us for having an eye toward a potential position change for Knapp. Let's see how he grades out as we go through the first few weeks.

I mean, you said it: he may have struggled early, but he improved in the second half, and showed real signs of growth. We're just dumping that to the side because someone else on the roster might be "prototypical"?

I also don't know if "really poor" is the best way to describe his pass blocking. Did he struggle at times? Sure. But that's normal for a true freshman playing the position for the first time.

Basically, my thought is that Knapp did a pretty damn good job at LT for a team that ultimately played for a national championship, and we can only assume he's going to get better and better. He might not look like a prototypical first rounder, but if he gets the job done in a way that helps the football team succeed, why are we pushing him out?

Normal . . . insofar as its normal for (1) a true freshman to play at all, (2) much less start at LT, and (3) have to play 15 games, including (4) the SEC champs in the playoffs.

I agree we are judging him a little harshly. And let's be clear. When they were all healthy in the Spring, neither CJag or GLam were the favorites to take the starting LT spot from him.

Because Knapp isn’t getting drafted high as a tackle if he gets drafted high it will be at guard. Lambert, Jaguash, and Will black will all be better tackles Black you aren’t keeping off the field next year he’s that good

Not sure how you can say that with any confidence. Knapp has a similar profile to Rashawn Slater. It’ll come down to his movement ability and length (though Slater only had 33” arms). The kid has been a stud. Can’t wait to see his growth in year two.

"Stud" is grossly overstating how he played last year, but for a true freshman it was certainly promising.

You guys are acting like Knapp is some all world tackle. He didn’t play great the first half last year chances are he doesn’t even see the field if Jaguash doesn’t get hurt. I think Lambert and Black are future first round picks at tackle they got the size and there’s already talks of Lambert being the 3rd best OL currently on the roster. So you plan on sitting him when Jaguash comes back?

I don't disagree and I'm not wanting to push him out for only "prototypical".

It's no secret the staff is already very high on Jagusah, Lambert, Black & others.

My fear is that Riley Leonard helped mask some of Knapp's deficiencies. My hope is that another year in the program means those deficiencies have been shored up. I only want the best 5 out there. If Knapp is one of them I'm happy. If Lambert is one of them, I'm happy. If someone who isn't one of the best 5 is starting, I'm less happy.

As I said above, which you seemed to gloss over: I hope Knapp plays heroic to start the season and this isn't discussed again.

I'm not actually, but the coaches are. They seem to think that he is the best option at LT.

Tell me how that fits. Why didn't they move Knapp to Guard in any of the pre-season practices?
He was out for Spring, or at least reduced load, and yet, in all the practices no one took hold of the LT spot.
CJ was in at RG not LT...If it is so obvious, how did the coaches miss that simple fix?

Probally because Lambert was dealing with an injury as well, and Jaguash got hurt. And why would they rush Black unless they needed too?

That’s the thing with all mobile qb…they cover up bad line play.

But he played much better against Texas am the second half. And didn’t really get pushed around until USC / playoffs

It will be interesting to see the line play with Mindy/carr without the threat of a dynamic runner.

Denbrock will develop the short passing game and screen game

Dude, your timeline is off.
Jagusah got injured far too late to pretend he was never available to complete at LT.
Lambert is working at Guard. There was plenty of time after Jagusah's injury to move Lambert out to LT and Knapp into Guard, yet they didn't.

Fact is, no one was ever in serious competition to take Knapp's position at LT, and that was the plan.

There is no reasoning with him. He loves the recruiting rankings and that's the end all be all.

Everything in your post is absolutely correct and at no point has the staff waivered on Knapp at LT.
