With some of the angst around the TE depth chart, I'd love to see Black used as an inline guy there Fr year. Too talented to redshirt, especially if ND only has him for 3-4 like Alt.

Normally I'm all for the oline kids using a redshirt year to grow/adapt, but this one is on the Alt trajectory.

I am fine with redshirting guys who really need a year to be ready. Everyone else i want on the 4 year track. Notre Dame recruiting should be far too well to be planning on many guys being in South Bend for five years.

That's the thing too, most OL are not ready to play their freshman year. You normally have to have some serious holes in previous recruiting years for a freshman OL to start, and/or they have to be a freakish talent to beat out upperclassmen. The jump from high school to college is big for linemen, harder than most other position groups. Alt was able to do it because he was an amazing worker with pedigree, and we had some serious holes in development and recruiting in the years prior to 2021 because of Long and Quinn. Fisher was also starting as a true freshman that year because of the lack of OL talent, but he got hurt first game.
