That's a disingenuous read though. We've all seen enough Cali and deep South kids with ND interest/verbals to last a lifetime. The location is a red flag for potential decommitment on its own, but it's possible to feel good about a kid from those areas sticking if they're doing the right things. This guy has nearly every red flag I can think of:

1) Very early commitment pre-junior year,
2) Somewhat surprise commitment/quick trigger after a visit with very little build-up,
3) Been to campus one time,
4) Plans on taking more visits elsewhere,
5) Other schools being seriously considered are cultural opposites from ND,
6) Other major southern powers haven't offered yet,
7) Misspells "Notre Dame" repeatedly while requesting social media follows from the fanbase

The whole thing smells like a 2011 BK era recruitment.

Happy he's committed and hope he sticks but if I were a betting man I'd say the only time we see him in a gold helmet is for a photo shoot.

All valid points. This is one where I'll be thrilled if he ends up signing, but won't hold my breath for it to happen.

I also think it's a huge data point that whatever the Irish/MF are selling on the trail right now is working, in a huge way. That's a win, even if McGaskin doesn't end up in South Bend in 2027.

At least the visit was impressive enough that he decided to pull the trigger. Even if he doesn't stick, that is a good sign that others who visit will stick. And if he does, that's great.

One thing that gives me some hope here is that he wanted to commit immediately on his visit. The staff suggested he go home and think about it and let the emotions settle. One month later, he still pulled the trigger. He’s also taken quite a few visits to big time programs in the south including UGA.

The differentiator for me from the 2011 BK recruitment is that in 2011 we were desperate to land these kids. With the way the program is being built currently, if the kid bounces out of the class I forsee a collectively *shrug*. We're not so desperate for talent that a four star LB from AL is going to move the needle.

Is there a button that says "You're right but I don't like it"?
A kind of Sad Like - because this would be that.

why do so many think he will flip when we don't have coach Kelly as the man in charge anymore but instead a coach who actually cares about recruiting and isn't afraid to take on the SEC in it's own backyard and plus we don't have coach Saban to compete against for recruits anymore

Because as greyhammer pointed and we who have been here since Willingham/Weiss have seen this all before and even a few reflags are too much to ignore but this dude checks every single one of them. I hope I’m wrong. I said the same thing about Deuce as well.

I’ll be shocked if he is even a commit in the next nine months. Especially if he continues to grow and play the way he is playing.

I get the Kelly criticism. There is a lot to critique. But he did want to recruit and win big. Unfortunately, the University absolutely hamstrung he and the team with the Golson and the Frozen Five bullshit that cold have been handled much better. As well as admissions. On top of that, you have the administration, including members of the BOT putting a restrictor plate on the program and publicly stating that they don't intend to compete with the elite.

I don't blame Kelly for throwing his hands up in the air and saying 'what are we even doing here?' Most coaches would have bailed long before he did.

i've been following recruiting since the late 80s so i get some of what you are saying but different times now with different and more motivated coaches and plus waaaaaaaay better facilities to sell to the kids including the new football facility opening up next year

I’m 40 and a public school kid with major SEC offers from Mobile, Alabama actually playing a snap for Notre Dame would genuinely be the most shocking thing I’ve seen in my entire life as a fan of this program.

ND under current leadership and MFMF is different right now. Ash also must at minimal present well to kids for ND to be closing on some of these defensive guys.
