Way too many people put NIU into context with Marshall and Stanford. It was disappointing and shocking on it's own, but it got lumped in with too many other previous setbacks rather than placed into the context of a season.

Other than the title game, just about everything that has occurred since has been positive.

What matters now more than ever is him being able to find good assistants, because their success is going to yield opportunity for the guys who are on this staff now. It's inevitable.

People talk about his charisma and aura, but he's a lot smarter than he's given credit for both nationally and within the ND beat. He's learned some things and has some pretty good mentors guiding him along.

I don't think I was ever too critical here of Freeman as a HC. Tried to give him a long leash, learning on the job those first few years. I fortunately missed most of the NIU game in real time being at Peewee football, definitely remember going to bed pissed though.

I was much more critical of Freeman during his one year stint as DC. I created the shorted lived thread "We tackle like s***, Freeman must quit!" I did feel when he was hired as HC that he would do a better job as HC than DC and I still feel that way. He's a fantastic motivator and the players obviously want to work hard for him. I think each season he gets better and he learns from past mistakes far better than BK ever did.

I attributed NIL to Riley and I was never able to circle back. I think it's why I'm excited for Carr, just really want that QB who could take us to the next level

Great post! Last season ND NEEDED to lose to NIU. They learned from that loss, they got better each game from that loss, they made adjustments from that loss, and they remembered that loss.

Just like recruits wanting to play for Freeman I think if given the chance assistant coaches will want to coach with Freeman it's a win-win situiaton for all.

Notre Dame and the football program is in good hands with Freeman.

He needs total control. Fire Rees, get control and see what happens. If he fails, he fails. I like him a lot, but I believe he was saddled with Rees.

Yeah. He’d be way better with an Al Golden type as OC and a Rees type as DC. He’s probably way more comfortable helping out on the defensive side.

I definitely feel as though Brian Kelly left (at least in part) because he knew this was going to be a bad team.
Freeman has been thrown under the bus a bit.
There is simply no real coaching experience at all on the offense.
I really think the move for Freeman would be to get the best QB coach available in starting today.
I want stock tips from these guys.
