ND's Talking Heads ... The good, bad & ugly

I just listened to the most recent 'The Independent' podcast with Sampson and Fortuna and it was a very hard listen. Fortuna was oddly intentional in trying to draw parallels between the 2025 team and the 2016 team. Talking about how things could go off the rails early, bad responses, etc.

I know the 2016 team had a lot of key talented players but please take one moment and compare the rosters and review the health of the program in the 2-3 preceding years. I think Fortuna has developed a selective bitterness toward ND that he's unaware of and unpacking live on-air.

I feel bad for him because that had to have been the most talented Penn State team in a loooong time and they lost their two biggest playmakers on both sides of the ball (Warren, Darth Vader). For a young, hobbled, greatly reduced Notre Dame team to show up and trade blows with PSU until landing the final haymaker when the odds were stacked against them, must really chap the ass of the PSU faithful.

I rarely read into things like this but for a program with loads of talent at all three levels of the defense and an offense returning every starting OL, improved WRs and potentially the best RB room in the country, there are only question marks about the QB and TE depth right now. It's hard to see how this thing goes 'off the rails' even if they aren't a finished product at kickoff.

As always, not intending to malign Matt but the scenario he painted felt more projection than analysis. Maybe others felt differently?
Fortuna is smug and not an easy listen. I feel badly saying that because of his health problems. He is also not plugged into the day to day happenings.

Prister is extremely optimistic about this team. Basically says they are loaded across the board and depth is as good as it’s been since peak holtz days. Weakest position is tight end in his opinion.

The Irish illustrated guys have said this team very well could be better than last year. However, record could be worse because schedule is much more challenging

Could see us being 10-2 but peaking down the stretch

It was something to the effect that USC was only going to be better going forward once Lincoln Riley got the program going. It's funny looking back at that, especially since we all called less than a month later that retaining Alex Grinch would doom their 2023 season.

Fortuna once predicted that we would lose to NC State because he was in Raleigh on a Thursday night once and the crowd was loud. This is what passes for "analysis" these days.

Yesterday I listened to him on the Independent suggest that Arkansas was going to be sneakily similar to A&M in terms of crowd noise and then find out on air that Arkansas's stadium has a capacity of 76K.

There is apparently a lot of excitement in the Razorback fan base for this game. They’ll make it fairly hostile, but Kyle Field is a whole other beast imo.

Heard that today. It won’t be anything like Kyle Field but it’ll be loud b/c you know it’ll be at night & the booze will be flowing. My concern is ND & MF don’t take them seriously b/c one thing Sampson & Fortuna were right about is the UA fan base has had this game circled on their calendar for a long time. Forget their HC Pittman, but I’d be concerned w/ Petrino calling the plays & that 6’6” QB running all over the place & ND sleep walking b/c UA isn’t aTm.

I agree. Is he even on “the beat”? He always refers to his connections around the country w/ various programs that he texts so I don’t doubt he find out what the ”word on the street” is at any given moment but that show comes off as Pete feeling sorry for him so he agrees to continue the pod w/ him. Even when they introduce the sponsors, Pete gets the well known Rhoback clothing & Matt has to pimp some company that makes t-shirts w/ phrases ND fans &/or coaches come up with (Matt probably owns Obvoius Shirts…LOL).

I shouldn't have shared my thoughts on the podcast. I wasn't trying to stir up a bunch of shots at Matt. His argument didn't feel grounded in reason but I don't want to trigger unnecessary negativity towards him. He's human, he's missed the mark like all of us but he does it publicly and owns it. I have respect for guys who do that, even if I don't agree with them.

I see it just the opposite. After that misstep last year I don't see Arkansas being overlooked, especially being on the road. MF can also use the A&M game as what to expect and another opportunity to take down the SEC again.

Fortuna hasn't really covered Notre Dame as anything approaching a full-time job since about 2016 (he mostly covered the ACC for The Athletic, a job he left a couple years ago). So it's natural that most of his references and comparisons will be to the early Kelly years, with the generally prepare-to-be-disappointed outlook those years inspired.

At this point he seems to be pretty underemployed and probably doesn't have the budget/health to even travel much, which is a tough way to cover this sport. I've nothing personal against the guy he just doesn't bring much to the table on that podcast (whereas I think Pete is pretty insightful). But whatever, it makes my Sunday morning runs go a little faster.

As for Arkansas, yeah I doubt we'd be sleepwalking for a night game on the road in the SEC, but you could see it being like an NC State or Louisville type game where an inconsistent but dangerous and moderately talented team plays up and we don't quite match their intensity. Not a trip to take lightly.

Fortuna's business model seems to be tweeting snippets of press releases emailed to him by schools/conferences. How the guy is making a living i will never know

Listening to an ND pod on a run is next level commitment. Sampson's voice doesn't exactly get the endorphins flowing. Respect.

Nothing of a substance, just a few butt hurt posters crying to merckxe and he hasn't even posted. Similar to the thread that was here.
