If we had betting odds on this type of thing back when Pope Francis was chosen, he would have had incredibly long odds. Very high chance it's a cardinal that nobody is even talking about right now.
Francis was prominent and seen as a real possibility when Benedict was made pope way back when. He was also the vote leader on each ballot when he became pope. It will likely be one of the more prominent Cardinals.

He was an easy sell for his opponents too because of his age profile and health concerns. They figured he wouldn’t last long but he made it 12 years

I follow the Pillar (an excellent Catholic journal ran by 2 canon lawyers) and on a recent podcast they mentioned that one of the Italian cardinals was seen as a strong contender, if not the strongest, back in 2013 but a scandal in his diocese had broken out immediately before the conclave. It was resolved shortly afterwards, but the implication was that he could not have been elected at that time.

I think someone from Asia or Africa would be very cool.

The lead candidate from Africa is an overly conservative knob...so "no thanks" on him.

Tagle would be interesting. Really young for a Pope and the Caritas International stuff needs to be considered, but I'd be supportive.

I'd be happy with him.

I don't want it to be Erdo but I get the feeling it'll be him. Dude aligns himself more often than not with Orban, who I do not particularly care for.

From what I've heard, I don't like Erdo. Like, at all.

As for the Africans being conservative, I don't know. I haven't looked into them much. I know Sarah is painted as conservative because he was a critic of Francis. I just think it would be cool if the Pope looked more like the universal church and less like the European/American church. Hence, my thought about rooting for someone from Asia or Africa.

Back to the liberal vs. conservative thing....
I know that these guys are human and therefore there's differences of opinion, but I also think that the "conservative" and "liberal" thing is sometimes a bit overblown by the media. Pope Francis was "liberal" but did he actually change any major doctrine? He was certainly pastoral, and willing to meet people were they are. His approach to certain things may have led some people to think doctrines had been changed. But, at the end of the day, nothing was.

Why don't you like Erdo?

Sarah would be great too.

I’m such a damn nerd,… I’m picturing the first American pope putting pineapple on the pizzas in Vatican City, and seeing all the locals renounce their faith…

First act as Pope is to have a Starbucks, McDonald's and Domino's build in Vatican City 😂

I havn't thought about this in the way that it's posted. I guess It's not about grey and black smoke, although we all think about It in times like these.
You posted the nail. Impressive thought provoking process.
I pray the for the Pope, RIP

Pope Francis was a change. Pope John Paul II is still my favorite.
