Merck’s NIL numbers seem to be at odds with our HS recruiting results. We don’t seem anywhere near top 3 money, both in portal spending or HS spending. Is all of it going to player retention? Mike Frank, John Brice, etc. don’t seem to paint nearly as rosy of a picture as far as ND’s NIL.

Not saying I don’t believe Merck re: NIL funds - just wondering when we’ll start to see results in recruiting like the other schools who we claim to be in the same ballpark as

I joined in January 2012 because I wanted to post about how Davonte Neal was basically gonna be ND’s Mardy Gilyard.

That’s my bad, everyone.
I lurked as a guest for several years then tried to join and I never got a response. I finally reached out to NDinLA, who was a mod at the time, and he got me an account. It's a great ND community. It's been interesting as I 've "watched" some of you grow up and then we have had some great members pass (I haven't looked lately, but there used to be some fantastic posts about the history of the site made by BGIF before he passed - interesting stuff). The community seems to go through some phases of personality here and there, but the core group keeps it a great place (sometimes by running people off LOL).

@Merckxe525 -- it feels like top-down support for the football program has increased significantly. Are there any particular BOT members that seem to be doing good things, driving resources to making sure the program is a success?

@Merckxe525

What is ND's plan for scheduling? Specifically:

-Is there optimism the USC series will be extended?
-Is ND trying to renew annual rivalries against Michigan and Michigan State?
-Are any home-and-home series with any marquee opponents being worked on? (Examples: Oregon, Tennessee, Penn State, Auburn, Nebraska, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ohio State)
-How is ND planning to address the Big Ten-SEC scheduling alliance? Does ND expect to still be able to schedule big time opponents from those conferences moving forward?

I am concerned that those conferences are essentially boxing out ND from creating a competitive schedule - regularly playing ACC opponents like Virginia, NC State, Wake Forest. Duke, etc. does not make for an interesting schedule.

Thank you.

So, I remain quite confused why Frank, and Brice, specifically, are reporting in the manner they are.
The Brice numbers have never made a ton of sense. We all know Leonard got 2mil plus just for showing up to campus. That would be a quarter of the total NIL ND has according to Brice. Intuitively, when we had to match Oregon to keep Love around he's now approaching that Leonard number so now you're half of what Brice is saying we spent on NIL and we aren't even to guys like Watts, BMo et al yet.

I've always thought he was being told to downplay by the admin or is simply confusing it with the portal budget....which is still a tad low but at least in the neighborhood.

The entire BOT, most of the administration, Pete, and all the usual donors, are all entirely on board with what the program is trying to accomplish
To add to this a bit.... everyone made a huge deal when Pete B took over from Swarbrick. Obviously a very big deal, but one could argue that the new president and the new leadership on the BoT were as big if not bigger deals for the football program. The University isn't messing around anymore..and won't be messing around for a while.

If Freeman fails it will be on him, and this leadership team will go after the elite of the elite to replace him.

Additionally, every player on the team makes a base salary that’s among the very best in the country in terms of bottom line base.
This would lead me to believe the number is going to be higher than reported.

I wouldn't have a guess to the actual #'s:
50K pretax X 95 scholarships is $4.75 MIL to start next year, 40K 3.8 MIL , etc.

Unless he suffers a setback physically, it's very likely that he's going to start. He has full command of the offense. His accuracy is incredible. Physically, he's exactly what ND wants. He's universally loved, and respected by the entire team.
Reading this just made my day.

Thank you Mr. Merckxe. You are a great addition to the board.

FWIW, when FUND first started a few years ago the base was ~25k. Obviously it's higher than that now and very few players just do the "base". It was really easy for players just on FUND to clear 100k if they did a decent amount of work.

Fans also need to realize that FUND was the happy face of NIL that ND strategically chooses to put out there. There are some other collectives active that are a little more "aggressive" *cough cough* that ND doesn't mention and doesn't want mentioned. Prister accidently mentioned one of them a few years ago on a pod and was politely told to not do so again. (This isn't a dig at Prister at all, just an example of how ND still keeps some of this stuff under wraps)

Players also get additional money once on campus from other sources. Hartman walked onto campus getting somewhere around 1.5. By the time he left ND he had cleared nearly 4mil(agreements with Beats headphones etc). Once players like that hit campus and start working with agents and NIL reps they can start exponentially increasing revenue. So the ND "NIL Budget" might be $20mil or whatever but if you totaled up everything the players are actually making, it far exceeds that.

I'm still a bit weak, and I do have some lingering pain, but overall, I'm doing well. My mother is currently in a facility for 3-4 weeks for intense physical and occupational therapy, but she's rebounding quite well all things considered. I appreciate you taking the time to ask.
In the grand scheme of things, we all love ND football, but our health and our families should hold most importance. I am glad to hear you are doing well and prayers for your mother's speedy recovery.

Merck---Has ND lightened the academic requirements at all to get the 5* athletes in that may be borderline students, or are they standing firm?

All correct.

Right now, the average base hovers between $150k-$165k for players not earning additional NIL in the form of up front contracts.

ND still prefers their entirely NIL structure to remain under the radar for numerous reasons.
Sounds like the University needs to hire team based Agents or designated NIL administrators per player to help recruit new NIL deals .... so Merck, do you want my legal resume?

I have no idea how Mercke knows so much. Like half the coaches on roster don't have this breadth of knowledge because everyone has their spots. The layers here are impressive. And if it's a troll job even more impressive lol.

@Merckxe525 We saw Aneyas get some solid run last year in a supporting role to Love + Price, But Kedren's skill set and size have always excited me. Do you think he sees an increased role next year (crowded backfield)? Is he a flight risk? Or do you think the most likely scenario is he gets his touches in 2026 and beyond

ND has been working to adjust their academic requirements for incoming freshman, and portal transfers for the past several years, particularly the past 2. ND's academic requirements are truly not an issue in the vast majority of cases where players are actually willing to go to class/pursue a degree.

Do you think ND needs a softball major for football players? I'm sure there are some already but probably fewer than other premier football schools.

- ND is speaking with Alabama, OSU, Texas, Tennessee, Florida, and a handful of others about potential 2 or more game series. Obviously, with Alabama specifically, there is already a current agreement.

And Texas ('28 and '29) and Florida ('31 and '32 - in fact, ND is set to play all 3 P5 Florida teams in 2032). Would love to see Tennessee back on the schedule again.

Of course, this is barring the whole thing doesn't get blown up in 2031.

FWIW, I think Mercke and I are using "base" different here. FUND has what I always joked was Universal Basic Income. If you are a warm body on the roster and do nothing but simply exist on the roster....you get the UBI..that used to be 25k. You can exponentially expand that by doing more activities for FUND etc but you didn't have to. You could just be on the roster, go to class, practice, games, and collect that 25k.

I think the "base" he references above is the average that players are making on the roster if they are taking the "UBI" and doing some additional things for FUND itself..and as he mentioned that 150-160 doesn't include additional deals signed outside of FUND.

I don't know what that 25k UBI number is now from FUND. I believe it's creeping towards/around 50 though.
