I wouldn't touch the spread personally. I know ND hasn't played anybody, but this isn't the Navy teams of old. They haven't had much in the way of quality opponents but they won't be shy of the fight that's coming on Saturday. I'm expecting a close game.
Correct, they are way more athletic at skill positions and throw the ball better. Their offense doesn't just pound it on the ground, they can air it out and will get single coverage against a true frosh to do so.

Also, check out this play:

Before the Stanford game, Navy had more passing yards than ND

One thing you can count on, we’ll fall behind 7-0. Just don’t make it 14-0. Really don’t want to play catch up vs these guys. They’ll go for it on fourth and one and get it by a foot. Hard to stay patient on offense but we must.
They are usually very good at tackling in space but they haven’t seen anyone like Jeremiah Love. I hope he gets the ball a lot.

Completely agree. And before anyone comes on here and starts quoting us, I'm reiterating that I'm not "scared' of playing Navy, but I'm just not predicting a blowout.

ND better take advantage of their possessions early. Can't afford these sleepy first quarter starts that have been a bit of a staple offensively this season. Defensively, I hope the young LBs can continue their strong play. There's no doubt they have the athleticism, which was definitely on full display last week, but the option is a different beast with eye discipline and making sound, accurate reads, then making plays.

I simply respect a quality opponent, which Navy certainly appears to be.

Greer Martini who was a triple-option specialist on defense at ND is the LB Coach at Charlotte. Guess he’s better at defending the triple option than he is at coaching his players to defend the triple option

Navy's offense has put up a ton of points....

But they played Bucknell, Temple, Charlotte, UAB, Memphis, and Air Force.

Their QB is good, and their offense is tricky. It is no longer a traditional triple option out of the wing T or flex. They have a lot of looks and can legitimately throw the ball sometimes....

But the 11 starters on ND will be the best 11 defensive players they have faced this year. It is going to be a massive step up for them.

I'm sure they will be ready, because it is Navy-ND. But I am still taking ND to cover.

And the best 11 starters on offense as well.

The early start time means I will likely miss the beginning of ND's annual lose-lose situation because I'll be coaching my daughter's soccer team.

ND is going to win another sleeper, and I mean that in the most positive way. They aren't going to wow anyone with style points but they will never be threatened in the second half and win comfortably by 20

And they'll do the same to FSU, Virginia, and Army. USC all depends on if Riley has lost the locker room or not. If they keep losing, USC may be the same. If they turn it around, it will be a tough game.

Ha for a minute I thought you meant Riley Leonard and was all indignant...
I can't see USC having much to play for by that point, and all those transfers aren't going to be as invested in the nation's greatest non-conference rivalry in as they used to be. We'll need to come to play (and stay healthy) of course, but if we're playing for a CFP berth I think we take that one.

Those that can, do. Those that can't, teach.
Greer should still be playing, but nobody runs the triple option at the next level.

I don’t disagree with you. I predicted ND to win by 20. Navy simply doesn’t have the overall athletes and physical skill as Notre Dame to consistently move the ball on offense or make consistent 3rd down stops/limit drives/3 and outs on defense. They’ll make a big play here and there … maybe the QB busts one and gets a big run or hits a big pass, but it will be very sporadic in nature.

Notre Dame, on the other hand, will methodically move the ball or get stops on defense because we have much more depth and are athletically superior. ND will get 7-14 points each quarter where Navy will have a TD or FG here and there.

Notre Dame will lean on Navy and wear them out. Other than the first quarter, the game will never be in question.

ND - 37
Navy - 17

Navy hasn't played Drayk Bowen yet. The Navy is going to have some busted up sailors walking around after this one.

I trust Golden to have a plan against the modern triple. The service academies are a nice story but have played the easiest schedules in the country so far.

Agree. This isn't his first rodeo against it. Dominated them last year.

This is definitely not the usual Navy offense. I was looking at Time of Possession for the season. ND is 48th in the country and Navy is 97th. ND averages 30:49 per game and Navy averages 28:35.

Also, Navy is first in the nation on Points per Play. Who would have ever thought that Navy would lead the nation in explosive plays.

It wasn’t arguing with you. It was more of making fun of the broadcast for mentioning NIU, 63%, 20%, & not being in a conference 100 times on Saturday.
My bad. I saw you replied and I instantly got into defensive stance. Bro hug?

I know defending the triple option is unique. With Cross and Mills starting to play as anticipated (and creating havoc), I think this comes down to Junior/Burnham & Oben/Young controlling the edge. I think Junior/Burnham duo will be fine. I'm worried about Oben/Young. Oben has underperformed and Young is just that, young. He could bite on a lot of the visual stuff he thinks he's seeing. If the DL holds up and forces early decisions on the option, it allows the athletes at LB to take charge...Ausberry, Bowen, KVA attacking with the sage old Kiser there to clean up. The DBs can perform on an island as the front seven takes away the run game.

And maybe Sneed can fly all over the field (ok, that's me just being very hopeful).
