Christy from the Bob & Tom show did some reporting back when he was playing. She tells a story where she was in the locker room after the game against the Pacers when Mutombo comes out of the showers naked. She said she was shocked and never knew a guy could be that big. lol

Charlie Hustle was the modern day version of Ty Cobb. Played hard and wasn’t afraid to take someone out. Ended Ray Fosse’s career in an All Star game. Hated the gambling got in the way of the HOF.

Charlie Hustle was the modern day version of Ty Cobb. Played hard and wasn’t afraid to take someone out. Ended Ray Fosse’s career in an All Star game. Hated the gambling got in the way of the HOF.

Wonder how many today would refer to Pete as “modern”. It was 35 years between Cobb retiring and Rose’s first game. It’s now been 38 years since Rose played his last game. Time flies.

Because of Pete, I wore #14 every year I played baseball and basketball until I didn't fit into the 14 jerseys in HS... so I switched to 44, then 34 & 24 in college and back to 14 on every basketball softball jersey I've worn since. Santo was my hometown fav but Pete was the only player in any sport I tried to play like (with Joe Morgan's elbow pump of course).

This is a sobering day. Hopefully Larry Legend out lives me.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I hope not. Nobody doubts his talent and contribution to the game. He still committed one of the absolute cardinal sins of sports... and never fully accepted responsibility nor showed much contrition. If he'd admitted the truth early on, accepted full responsibility, and worked to make it right, he'd have been in 20 years ago. I loved watching him play and he was absolutely one of the best ever, but I hope he never gets inducted. There are consequences to actions.

You could argue that any Red game that he was a manager for that he didn't place a bet on was, in effect, Rose betting against the Reds. Or, sending the message to the gambling community that he didn't believe that they were winning that night.

Pete's gambling was the biggest controversy since the "Black Sox" World Series scandal in 1919 which ironically was against Cincinnati. Given how pro sports has now embraced betting, it's probably time to put Charlie Hustle in the HOF.
