I grew up in Tennessee and have only ever driven through Pigeon Forge. Seemed like a hellscape.

Its actually "Sevierville" (even though its really in Kodak).
As a Knoxvillian I think its ironic that there are posters on this board that go to Sevierville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg more often than I do. Once every couple of years is more than enough for me. It's like Mrytle Beach with no water and worse traffic.
HillBilly Times Square.

With that said, the free moonshine samples all over are solid.

I went to gatlinburg a few years ago with the wife, holy hell I hated all of it. The only part I liked was driving through the hills and seeing some bears. The rest was a bs tourist trap of the highest order. The older I get the less I want to go to places packed with people

As a kid, I loved how busy it was. Made it seem like the cool place to be. Arcades, go-karts, and “different” food options than home seemed amazing. You also could talk your parents into buying you some truly dumb, useless shit if you were lucky.

As an adult, I enjoy staying in a cabin on the mountain, enjoying the quiet morning hours on the porch with hot coffee and hot breakfast in the cold air, and enjoying the quiet evening hours with the wife in a hot tub in the cold air.
During the day, I enjoy watching my kids go crazy in an affordable, tacky environment just like I did back in the day. Makes me feel connected to everything, knowing that we’ll be going to Savannah, Gulf Shores, Outer Banks, etc. the next year, when my family couldn’t afford to do the same when I was little.

Okay, I’m done romanticizing about being a
Midwest hillbilly now.

They've both got crappy wax museums too!

Took a family vacation there once--never again

And somebody should tell their chamber of commerce that other parts of country know how to make pancakes and have readily available access to maple syrup too
Really? I just took the family to Myrtle Beach a few weeks ago. I remembered going about 25 years ago when I was in high school. Not much had changed, although people told me there were some seedy parts. We stayed in a nice resort hotel on the water. We didn't do a whole lot of activities honestly, did the Family Adventure Park, putt putt golf, Medieval Times, and the wax museum as a joke. We mostly just relaxed at the beach and the pool. I thought it was still pretty good, better than our trip to Gatlinburg.

somebody at work recently was talking about Myrtle Beach and said they were told by friends living in or near the town that the crime rate around that area is really bad

Myrtle Beach crime is horrendous. When we moved to SC in 2012 that was one of the first things the locals warned us about. If going that direction, go south of Myrtle - Murrells Inlet, Garden City, Surfside Beach - those are the go to spots. Myrtle Beach itself is SC's most dangerous city.

It's a super good place if you're looking for a screen printed racist T-Shirt.

What is it with that? I grew up going to North Carolina, but everyone else I knew in Ohio spent their summers in Myrtle Beach. Now my sister in Cleveland takes her kids there every year.

To clarify I was talking about Smokey Mtns area

Have never been to Myrtle Beach

Did just recently get back from Charleston, SC area and really liked it

Not touristy at all (relatively speaking when compared to a lot of places) and easy to get to the beaches
