This is not a pump the breaks because I love the consistency and talent we should get with Carr, potential high upside with leonard and minchey, then incredible upside with deuce.

With that said, kelly went on a run of landing big time qbs. This shows you evaluation isn't always right and development is so critical post high school

He landed Kiel (everyone was so high on), then Zaire, then kizer, then Wimbush ( i was crazy high on him like deuce), Book (the only qb on this list people weren't high on), then Phil (everyone was super high on)..... Kelly had a crazy good run at landing QBs, he just missed a bunch on their evals (many people did) and also did a poor job developing. It was a 6 to 7 year run that everyone thought we were going to have consistent high talent top QB play.
If you look at Kelly's QB recruiting he never achieved the upwards trajectory that Freeman has. Kelly's best three year stretch was still below Freeman's average so far.

Zaire and Kiser are not the level of these two. They are Minchey tier. Kelly never got qbs like this back to back. So if one or two didnt pan out, we were screwed
Zaire was around 100th nationally with offers from a ton of schools including bama and OSU.

Kizer was a 4 star that blew up late with offers from a bunch of big schools including bama

Minchey did not have a good offer list, ND was by far his best offer.

Everyone i mentioned kelly landed was 5 star or 4 star other than book. Kelly had an amazing run of landing qbs then not developing them. He also didn't have a portal

Take away the portal and the last 4 years and probably this year would be awful regarding the QB room (kelly had a huge part in that with poor evals and misses).

Not sure where that is from but rating Minchey at 93.22 as a prospect out of high school seems very high. His offer list is of someone in the high 80's.

Brendon Clark who is 88 pts had as good of if not better offers.

Does Deuce's recent performances move the needle at all with the WR's that we are recruiting?

Hines is in the fold and Robinson is very close as well. IB and On3 both reporting in the last 24 hours that we are still the favorite for Meadows and seem to be in a good spot with him. If we get all three what a haul

I wouldn't say Kizer blew up especially when comparing him to Carr or Knight. He struggled at the elite 11 and ended up the composite 14th ranked prostyle QB back when they split those 2 up. In today's version of the rankings he'd be closer to the mid to upper 20's.

I liked Kizer quite a bit coming out of high school but the hype around him vs the last 2 qbs we've had committed isn't all that close.

While I agree with you're general premise about tempering expectations

Carr and Knight are a different breed than anyone Kelly signed outside say Phil J and Gunner Kiel--with Kiel just kinda being a strange prospect in general and while obviously with benefit of hindsight neither materialized

Those are all top 50ish guys with Knight potentially trending towards top 25

The others were kinda fringe top 150ish types. Wimbush I remember may have been a little higher but we just kinda easily slipped in late and stole from PSU without much fanfare

Also with the onset of popularity of 7v7 etc in the past five years or so, these guys get crazy vetted nowadays

Knight could easily bust but I'd be shocked if Carr didn't amount to something

Kelly also traumatized all his QBs entire tenure at ND up until Rees became OC which I'm guessing wasn't a coincidence because Rees seemed to be about the only QB that didn't succumb to Kelly mentally. Probably had some pointers or the balls to tell Kelly to cool

Suffice it to say, QB room was always a train wreck to mid at best under Kelly outside of 2015 and half of seasons in 2012 and 2014

After seeing the Wimbush to Minkah Fitzpatrick high school TD highlight. I was all in on big strong arms. After Wimbush couldn't hit the broad side of the barn. I've cooled my tit's on the long toss.

We didn't quite understand the importance of the Minkah Fitzpatrick aspect of that tandem during the 2014 season.

People talking about highly rated QBs and "when has ND signed a QB like..."

Wimbush is the best comp to Deuce in terms of having a cannon arm and elite athleticism. He's shorter, their games are very different, but he had the *potential* to be a gamebreaker at QB.

If Riley Leonard stays healthy, what you will see is Deuce vs CJ battling for the starting job. Loser probably transfers. Where things will get weird is if Leonard gets hurt and CJ rather than Angeli gets the minutes.

This is where I'm at. I still think it's highly unlikely Deuce ever starts a game for ND.
