This is not a pump the breaks because I love the consistency and talent we should get with Carr, potential high upside with leonard and minchey, then incredible upside with deuce.
With that said, kelly went on a run of landing big time qbs. This shows you evaluation isn't always right and development is so critical post high school
He landed Kiel (everyone was so high on), then Zaire, then kizer, then Wimbush ( i was crazy high on him like deuce), Book (the only qb on this list people weren't high on), then Phil (everyone was super high on)..... Kelly had a crazy good run at landing QBs, he just missed a bunch on their evals (many people did) and also did a poor job developing. It was a 6 to 7 year run that everyone thought we were going to have consistent high talent top QB play.
While I agree with you're general premise about tempering expectations
Carr and Knight are a different breed than anyone Kelly signed outside say Phil J and Gunner Kiel--with Kiel just kinda being a strange prospect in general and while obviously with benefit of hindsight neither materialized
Those are all top 50ish guys with Knight potentially trending towards top 25
The others were kinda fringe top 150ish types. Wimbush I remember may have been a little higher but we just kinda easily slipped in late and stole from PSU without much fanfare
Also with the onset of popularity of 7v7 etc in the past five years or so, these guys get crazy vetted nowadays
Knight could easily bust but I'd be shocked if Carr didn't amount to something
Kelly also traumatized all his QBs entire tenure at ND up until Rees became OC which I'm guessing wasn't a coincidence because Rees seemed to be about the only QB that didn't succumb to Kelly mentally. Probably had some pointers or the balls to tell Kelly to cool
Suffice it to say, QB room was always a train wreck to mid at best under Kelly outside of 2015 and half of seasons in 2012 and 2014
