The supply is in line to outweigh the demand, which could drive down the value of the position. It’s unlikely to be as dramatic as the running backs’ sinking market, but seven personnel executives and coaches around the NFL told The Athletic something has been developing, even if it only becomes a short-term trend.

That’s true. I heard just this week that the highest paid safety, Derwin James, has a contract that people don’t even want to remotely approach in the league. If your top paid guy is an extreme outlier then you’ve got a problem with the health of the market (for the players anyways).

The struggles in Denver for Wilson are impossible to overlook. I think what Pittsburgh wants to do on offense will benefit Russ a lot. For just $1.2M, it’s impossible to not like the signing.

I do think Russell Wilson is washed up, but, as a Pittsburgh fan, a washed up Russell Wilson is still better than what they trotted out there last year.

I don’t see any real downside to this signing. They weren’t going to add anyone better so a 1 year deal for the veteran minimum is a good deal for the Steelers - they can always cut him if he’s somehow worse than Pickett.

I figure they draft a guy late to fill out their QB room.

Going from a Sean Payton that wants nothing to do with you to a Mike Tomlin who is ready to work with you just feels like something that could do wonders for anyone's career let alone Russell Wilson.

Packers cut Jones, sad to see, but I like the Josh Jacobs move. Similar skill set, younger player.

Silver lining on the Jones cut is them announcing the Xavier McKinley signing. Safety was by far their biggest need this offseason. I imagine they'll target a RB early in the draft, as well.

Baker's coming off a career high 4,044 yards passing and also a career high 28 TDs to 10 INTs. Won them a playoff game too. He's not elite, but that's a steal I think for a decent QB. I like to see him do well, I think Cleveland really screwed the pooch when they let him go while playing injured and then sold the farm for locker room cancer Watson. Can't root for the Browns while he's still their QB, he ain't it.

Baker then proceeded to get cut by the next two teams he played for he was so bad. He eventually grew up and TB made something of him, but acting like Cleveland was dumb to let him go is silly. He was never earning a contract extension in Cleveland. And idk where you've heard anything about Watson being a locker room cancer.

Yeah, I definitely agree that changing the coach may help. Russell Wilson played the vast majority of his career under Pete Carroll and was his best there. Sean Payton seems to be the exact opposite of Carroll personality-wise. So that may have been a shock and a tough adjustment.

I think he’s over the hill, but going back to playing for a players coach in Tomlin certainly can’t hurt. At best the Steelers get a league average QB, at worst they cut him and lose nothing. I think Wilson will be pretty motivated to fit in and perform well - this may be his last real shot to be a starting QB in the NFL.

I genuinely just want the Steelers offence to be watchable again.

I think the larger concern with Wilson is that he seems like he's somewhat of a prick, and that the locker room turns on him pretty quickly.

I agree it's a good signing for Pittsburgh IF Wilson agrees to sacrifice for the good of the team. But if he wants to control how the offense plays (i.e., what happened in Seattle that ultimately led to his departure there), things could go south quickly.

Worth it for the potential upside if the cost is only $1.2M.

I guess for me the investment is a combination of the finance risk with upside potential. I agree the financial risk is limited. But what is Russ going to provide that will allow Pittsburgh to compete with KC? I don't see this as a huge step forward at the QB position and the offense will still be challenged. Denver Wrs are better than what Pitts will have, so it's not like personnel wise it's a huge leap forward. I think it cements Pitts as a 9 or 10 win team.

I agree that Darnold and Trubusky are worse contracts, but Atl has a fantastic roster that will flourish with Cousins. They are going to be really good next year IMO.

But if I were Pittsburgh, I would rather get Fields TBH. There is at least an upside scenario there were you could find a good, quality QB for the long haul if it worked out well. Pittsburgh was a 10 win team last year with 13 total passing touchdowns from 3 quarterbacks. Meanwhile, Russell Wilson threw 26 touchdowns. 9/10 wins should be easily attainable, unless injuries hit.

Russ won't provide much of anything to compete against KC. Justin Fields and Kirk one playoff win Cousins won't either. The addition of Russ just needs to make the offense more competent. But, yes, I would much rather of the younger, higher upside Fields too.
