This is a crazy insane hire.
Is this was most people are thinking?
National coach of the year this season.
Two time defending Pac 12 coach of the year.
Has been an offensive genius for the better part of a two decades
Within a game of the most improbable national championship of probably the last 15 years. Auburn and Newton in 2010 comes to mind.
This doesn't seem like a Sunny Dykes one year wonder with TCU last year, this guy can really coach and has proven it now at different levels and different conferences all over the country.

Can he handle the Tuscaloosa crowd and cultural uniqueness...time will tell.
I'm open to hearing better realistic options, but he seems like a very good hire on paper.

i can't see the majority of Bama players wanting to stay and play for him. They are gonna have a massive portal exodus now surely??

I think he's an absolutely terrific coach and is certainly a worthy candidate.

My only concern would be the cultural fit (i.e. Harsin). But he's a much better coach than BH. The guy has won everywhere he's been. Players love him.

If he can build a defense there, it could be a home run.

He’s going to really have to step up his recruiting. Washington isn’t Alabama, but he just pulled a class ranked 46th this cycle.

But he was Plan C, and that might mean something

If for some reason KD is just negotiating a higher salary/contract - I say Drinkwitz would be the next best hire - Bred and Born Okie/AK-an and has SEC background/exp. now.

Agreed, but the fanbase (at least the online minority) seem totally against that...and he was never reported from any of the college football national reporters as someone who was being vetted for the job (over the last 48 hours).

He either doesn't want it, and has voiced that to the powers that be, or the powers that be don't want him at Bama.
At least that is what it looks like from the outside.

Of the realistic options, I don't think there's anyone better than DeBoer. He culturally may not be a fit, but he seems to do just fine everywhere he's ever been. I am sure when he goes 9-3 or 10-2 this year, there will be an unreasonable revolt, but it's about as good as they could have done.

Ask yourself this: If ND was in a coaching search now, who would be at the top of everybody's list? It would 100% be DeBoer.

I think DeBoer is probably the best ball coach on the market from a pure "football coach" perspective.

It's really gonna come down to whether Bama is can "$ell it$elf". Mediocre recruiters don't become ace recruiters later in life. It's just a trait you need to be born with. DeBoer might be a good enough coach to get Bama to the 12 team playoffs, but even Saban knows it's about the Jimmy's and Joe's at this level.

What?! Don't be ridiculous!! Nick Saban is available, he'd be at the top of the list

I don't know where the " bad cultural fit" stuff is coming from unless its pure geography. DeBoer grew up in a small town in South Dakota and was the head coach at the U of Sioux Falls (NAIA) for a few years before getting into low end Division One jobs and then moving up the football food chain.

Is the "culture" in South Dakota that much different than Alabama? They're both God, Guns and Guts territory.
