Mills is an enigma to me, because he's been pretty much the opposite of what I and many others expected.

Most expected him to be a very disruptive havoc creator inside but felt he would struggle maintain gaps and commanding doubles in the run game.

Instead, he hasn't really been at all disruptive, but has been shockingly very stout against the run.

I definitely have felt that Cross was the superior DT, even playing Nose. Maybe I’m missing a lot but I haven’t noticed Mills take on significantly more double teams than Cross.

Almost Ishaq-like. Good enough and physically ready enough to play early.in career, always sound to the defense but never doing anything extraordinary.

Def guys you gta have on team but always left wanting more.

Almost makes you think maybe all the armchair QBs dont know as much as they confidently proclaim they positively know. Mills and Cross both us there. Fire Al Washington.
10 players on the field 3 times, all 3 missing a dlinemen…. He’s not out of the woods yet

I’m extremely disappointed in nds dline ability to get at the passer in obvious passing downs, but I’m very pleased at their ability to physically stack up the los to stop the run

Need more snaps for Onye and Rubio, less for Mills and Cross. Starting tonight

I think they need to as well just to stay fresh and keep good consistent pressure.

But my vision of the defense tonight will be a lot like NC state. They are not going to let this QB beat them with his legs. So they are going to contain him.

Maybe it’s b/c he’s so big but I’ve noticed Mills taking on more double teams than the other DL

Hypothesis based on my—and everyone’s else’s— experience playing sports…

Maybe Cross is the unselfish player who happily volunteers for the position of greatest need: here, NT.

Mills is the athletic kid who has it in his head he wants to play a certain position, and he’s athletic enough, and there was a need at both positions, so the coaches go along with it.

It looks like it’s turning out, that absolutely massive Mills should be an athletic nose. And the undersized Cross should be a 3-4 DE or DT.

You're not going to notice good DTs on the stat sheet typically. A lot of teams don't like to run A and B gaps, especially in the era of the Spread and the death of FBs. DTs are doing well when they're eating up double teams and controlling gaps.

He's got one year left?

Yes. Without knowing him and his thinking about his NFL future, I’d pegged him at 50/50 staying or going this season.

His run defense grades are great, but despite creating some good pressure at times, he’s inconsistent as a pass rusher. Run-stopping DTs don’t get drafted high unless they are 330 pound nose tackles that can two-gap.

He has six more games, plus the bowl game, to show a bit more.

I would’ve agreed (and Onye and Rubio did get more snaps against Duke than they did vs Ohio State). But this is amusing in retrospect.

Has anyone seen anything about Bothelo? I'm assuming he's also coming back, haven't seen anything to the contrary.

I get the impression there is an orchestrated schedule for the players to declare their futures he’s probably next

So the front 4 will be as good as last year, probably better because everyone is a year older. The linebackers lose some veteran savvy but have more upside in the young bucks + flexibility/leadership in Kiser. Secondary loses Cam Hart -- who kicks ass -- but luckily we have a ton of other good young corners.

Hard to see this group not being elite as long as we keep Golden.
