He will probably come back in two years and be more of a grown man...the negativity here is ridiculous. If he leaves he leaves but we knew what we were signing up for

It sucks for ND but now they have an additional roster spot for 2 years while Freeman is killing it with defensive recruiting. He'll come back as a 20-21 year old with 3+ years of eligibility and the staff is already high on him. This could be a big win for ND even if it's not the most desirable.

Good grief, people act like he's a returning top-10 NFL draft pick.

Hopefully the Church sends him somewhere he can eat (I.E Brazil, Australia, somewhere in the US, etc.). I believe that Badger got called to Ecuador. No disprespect to ecuador, but they arent known for large food production and missionaries coming home gaining weight.

The other thing that would be interesting is if ND, and more importantly Balis, would be willling to give instructions on excercises that would be good for maintaining some athleticism. The rules regarding communicating with friends and family have been lowered and its easier to communicate than even 3 years ago. Balis could touch base weekly/daily if he wanted (depending on the mission. Again, tough to communicate with someone daily down in Equador, but at least then it could be weekly.)

I played baseball after serving a mission in Brazil. I committed to BYU after a year and a half on the mission with 6 months left. BYU then sent me a full plan of what they wanted me to do to maintain my body the best I could. While I didnt have gym equipment, I would run, do bands, push ups, body weight squats, etc. When I came back, I got back into shape within 3 months. I know guys who leave BYU football for theirs. BYU has a whole plan that they want them to follow. We could potentially do the same.

And in keeping in touch even monthly, I believe that it would only heighten his appreciation for the University and staff.

Not to be completely apathetic or anything, but like this doesn't move the needle for us in either direction. Right? Like when he signed I just assumed he'd be a permanent practice squad player (MAYBE ST contributor if we're lucky) or he would wind up at BYU in a couple years.

Raleigh, NC i guess from a football perspective its better he's going there than some remote part of Brazil or SE Asia where he wouldn't have access to decent gym/nutrition. Didn't Chris Badger basically come back from his mission abroad 40 lbs lighter or something and basically had to start over from scratch rebuilding his body>

i would say anywhere in the States is a win for the program. At a minimum we can get him in a HS gym through some connections I would imagine.

Yes, he's due back for the winter semester beginning in January. There has been nothing to report to say he won't be returning.
It’ll be interesting to see what kind of physical condition he’s in when he reports to campus. Hopefully they’ll be a bit of a gap between when his mission ends and January where he can dig back into some conditioning.

IIRC, he didn't use his redshirt year so he will probably use 2024 to get back in playing shape.

I believe he did his mission in Raleigh, so he didn’t go to a country where he wouldn’t have access to a gym and nutrition.

I will never be a fan of the Mormon mission students. They don’t play football for two years and are not able to eat or train to get ready so they come in actually in worse football shape than when they left.

On the flip-side, they have old man strength.
I know Im in the minority here but I'd rather not use football schollys on Mormon missionaries. I have always felt this way and none of them have been productive or even lasted at Notre Dame. Im truly drawing a blank on one who took his mission and came back to be a meaningful contributor.
