I've been a diehard ND fan since about 1987, but this is also where I'm at. I've stepped back from following recruiting a bit, and have been so used to watching failure on the big stage, I'm almost numb to it. There is another day, another game.
I’m kinda at this point too. I was DESTROYED after USC 2005 and UTL 2011. I’m almost laughing at how stupid this loss is. Sun is going to come up tomorrow and this team wasn’t winning a championship anyways.

Overall the team played hard. There didn’t appear to be a huge talent gap of any kind. Coaches could have called a better game especially when it counted. Tackling was bad again and needs to be addressed.

I’ll probably get crap for this next one. Hartman is an above average QB, but not elite. He reminds me of a backup NFL QB who plays in the league for 20 years. Knows where to go with the ball, and has a great understanding of the game, but doesn’t possess many elite skills.
Re: Hartman, I don’t think it’s that hot of a take. He does a lot of things very well and few things poorly. No one is mistaking him for Caleb ever though.

He's a very good college QB. If he was actually elite he would be in the league already.

I’m flying overseas tomorrow for a business trip for the week. Back on Friday and will be back to watch them on Saturday.

At this point, I’m just happy to watch them play on Saturdays.

Sure rushing 4 or 5 is a possibility and it could pay off. But a breakdown in your backfield increases percentage wise I would think pretty drastically. Heck we saw it happen when Ben mo corner blitzed and left a receiver wide open.

By dropping 8, the breakdown is less likely to occur. Unfortunately we beat the percentages with Hendersons inexplicable decision to guard the back of the endzone.
Yeah on rewatch you guys are right on Henderson… back line should’ve had their feet planted on the goal line. No chance someone can fit it in a 10 yard window over your head. But I still think you needed guys more active underneath at the 5 yard line. They throw short of the sticks you rally and tackle and the game is over. I don’t understand having two linebackers guarding space in the middle of the field we should give zero shits about. Henderson is actually splitting two guys by himself as Bertrand trails under the guy running up the seam.

Edit: to put it a better way, at the start of the play there are 3 WRs against 3 DBs at the top of the field. Then there is JT Bertrand near the LOS. I have no idea why we weren’t lined up in standard prevent defense with drop 8 having a 4-4 split. We should’ve been able to get bracketed coverage with 6 guys towards the top of the screen and two towards the bottom. Minimum 4 guys around the ball when it’s thrown. Instead there is literally no one in front of Egbuka. Reminds me of how the Bills blew it in the playoffs against the Chiefs.

Agreed. Linebackers should have definitely had more depth in their coverage.

UTL was kind of a blessing for me because something snapped there and since then I've basically become:

Nothing will ever hurt like UTL in 2011 again, and that's good lol. But I feel bad for the younger people or the people still in that hesdspace, and fully support them saying that this constant game of "almost there" is unacceptable.

We are the Chicago Bears of college football. One championship in the last 40 years, most of the program highlights are from the days when you had to go to the movie theater to see them on the screen, and the people in charge are perfectly content with the status quo because they are basically printing money.

Inexcusable.

They win the game if they have 11. The left side of OSUs line had a 3 on 1 and just sealed him out. If someone is there, it’s 3 on 3 but the seal doesn’t happen and the RB either has to bulldoze his way or try to bounce but ND can rally to the ball.

11 on the field…we win. Coaching from all sides lost the game.

I knew it was happening. I don't know the ultimate joy as a ND fan. I do think even need a title, I just want to see them be in it, truly.

We were so close but just knew it'd happen. DJ Brown dropped picks. If Sam Hartman completes that screen it's 100% a TD to Price.

Above average and very good are the same thing IMO. Average would be “good”. So he is very good, but very good doesn’t make the difference it just means the position won’t lose the game for you.

God that was a frustrating game to lose. Probably the first time since the Holtz era where we went toe-to-toe with an elite team and lost but I felt at the end like WE WERE THE BETTER TEAM!
Usually we're hanging on for dear life in those games. But tonight we were their equals and if, like, any of a half-dozen plays breaks differently, we win. So yeah I still think we go 11-1.
But meantime I'll hang my hat on that, and hope that next time we don't just rush three, or that we get a little less cute in short yardage and just give the damn ball to Estime, or that when they have the ball on the one we actually put 11 defenders on the field. Like I said, what a frustrating game to lose.

Hey now, we deserve more respect than that.

My first post was theatrical with the “I’m dead inside” and “this is worst than the Bush Push” but I am really in the Lax / Greyhammer headspace.

For the young-ins, this loss is objectively worse than the Bush Push; but as someone who lived through that game, UTL, 2012 Natty, and FSU 2014, you can’t kill what is already dead. Still like to yell at the TV though.

I have given up. Straight up I have given up on us ever actually competing for anything in my lifetime. We simply do not have what it takes.

A couple weeks ago I literally attempted to kill myself. I had the rope around my neck and was checking for structural integrity. I literally put it off partly because I thought that I wanted to get through football season. Even in my darkest moment, I had the hope that we might do something. This team literally gave me life.

But that is gone.

We will never win another championship. We probably won't break our NY6 streak before that term literally doesn't mean anything anymore. We will never be anything other than what all our critics say we are. That was proven before the game when we let yet another team paint our stands. The game just solidified it.

Hopefully I find something else to keep me on this earth before my next breakdown, but that thing will definitely no longer be Notre Dame.
Bro. Please reach out to loved ones & a professional therapist. In none of our world is a silly game worth despair. Now I suspect it’s more than that and I pray you speak w/ someone on that. Never put well being in the hands of something you can never control. That’s especially true for a football team made up of 18-22 yo kids.

I don’t know if you’re going through a rough spot or have clinical depression but either way, both can be dealt with in a healthy way. Our lifetimes are but only a blip on the long string that is eternity. Look past this life and imagine eternity. That’s helped me realize we are here for a short time so embrace your loved ones and live for them and yourself.

I don’t know you from Adam but you’ve been on this board awhile so I know you have good taste in football programs. Seriously, please DM me if you need to talk to someone. I think I speak for a lot of folks on this board In that we can appear to “live & die” for our team but theres’ soooo much more to this short life that makes a game immaterial. I spoke w/ God today to simply remind me that this is a game…it doesn’t matter in the big scheme of things. Enjoy it for what it is.

I pray you find serenity.

A loss like this won't be so bad if they can learn from shortcomings and mistakes and turn it around heading into the playoffs once the 12-team playoff kicks in next season, but this last year of a 4-team playoff, it might be too much, but we'll have to see if we can win out and hope for a lot of Top 10 carnage.
