Seeing all these preseason rankings with ND in the teens is so funny to me considering we were somehow #5 going into last year with a unproven QB and new coach. Last year I felt we were overrated going into the season but this year I 100% think people are sleeping on us.
Last offseason was also maybe the only time ever that ND had sympathy from the overall college football landscape, considering how BK left and how immensely popular Freeman was. Plus coming off that run of 10+ win seasons it was easy to start high on ND stock.

Why is anyone concerned on Rudolph? I mean if Pat Coogan was underrated and is grabbing the bull by the horns it's not Rudolph's fault. Is there another reason to be skeptical?

meanwhile, people wanted Rudolph to develop Rocco and help him get to his potential - appears has - zero praise lol

Championship back on

I have zero confidence in Merriweather mattering this year. All the beats are down on him, gets punked by youtube kicker, then opens this video with a drop right in his hands, then gets locked down by Morrison on a one on one and it looks like Morrison isn't even trying hard, then is the only WR to juggle the simple pass/catch in the Stuckey drill.

Colzie > Merriweather in 2023 and I dont believe in Colzie. 0-12.

Wait
Was that a direct snap AND a pass from Tyree???
or is that Avery Davis back running the package that never was?
it was a direct snap from Tyree but then he ran a zone read to Hartman, Hartman then pulls up and throws a fade

Basically a version of this play:

Preseason rankings are dumb. It's just conjecture based on last season's record and guesswork how tough this season's schedule will be (the only reason I can see for ranking us in the teens is that three teams we play are ranked higher than us. If there are 12 teams that are acutally better at football than ours I'll be very surprised).

Play some games first.

thats the issue, some people accommodate this in their rankings and others don't. Others rank teams on how many future NFL players they will have etc. It's all very subjective, you gotta take it with a pinch of salt.

This is one thing that sorta cracks me up... when we take guys, we are always like "oooo he could be underrated or have high upside" and then sometimes they win the job and we are like "wtf he was a 3-star!"

You never really know until they're on the field whether the guy is exceeding expectations OR the person in front of them was a "bust".

And from the sounds of it, Coogan has been turning heads for a year and a half, just hadn't broken through.

I completely agree my only issue is from most of the practice reports it’s more like “yea coogan is repping with the 1s I guess” not really a Coogan is outplaying the other guards. At least from what I’ve read, I’m not there so who knows really.

I think Prister and O'Malley had a good take on this earlier in the week. And, I know it's been shared by others already but I think it's worth repeating.

Folks were saying this last Fall Camp when Coogan, seemingly, worked his way into the two deep. A year later and somehow without mention of Coogan it became a forgone conclusion that the more highly rated and much anticipated Schrauth was going to pass him up.

Ignoring the 87 that 247 gave him - Coogan had offers from OSU, A&M, LSU, OU, Oregon, and Michigan. Hardly a diamond in the rough.
I think Penn State and Tennessee offered as well, but I just don’t have the time to look into it.

Don’t know what’s been discussed on here or not, but some pretty interesting things from practice today, as far as the 1’s & 2’s were concerned (and not just talking about Coogan).

FWIW, I believe this is the tempo drill. It is not a competition drill or a full speed drill by any means. It's a walk through of the offense. Ball goes to a pre-determined offensive player.

100% PI on Mickey, but would like Tobias to fight more for it.

Tobias has further to go than I would have hoped it seems from videos/reports, but I still think he has much bigger impact than Colzie.
