New Apparel and Shoe Deal

So reading that article again, I think two parts of it help put this in context.

It says we are the highest, but also close to the range of a lot of other schools. It also says that the UA offer well outpaced the others. That means we weren't offered the same deals as those other schools from Nike or Adidas.

I think what that says is that the college apparel deal market has collapsed from where it was a few years ago. This kind of mirrors what has happened in other apparel deals where it seems like there is less spending on everything except the biggest brand names. I've heard about it effecting basketball and soccer, where star players who used to get massive deals aren't anymore while people like LeBron, Durant, Messi, Ronaldo, etc. are getting even bigger deals. This might be made even worse in the college game because it seems like UA was the one largely pushing the limits last time, and now that they're mostly out, Nike and Adidas don't really have to compete and drive up prices.

So I guess we'll just have to see how this deal stands up to the test of time. After Under Armour pulled out of their deal with UCLA, UCLA's next deal was for less than half the value. You can't even find numbers for Cal or BC, which probably means they are quite a bit lower than their previous Under Armour deals. It might end up being impressive that we were able to get any increase at all in what might be a time when schools are getting less.

This was the exact paragraph I came to post.

They maximized the money offered to them - what the hell else do you guys want? Some of you cry more than my two year old and 6 month old combined.

I'd immediately sing the praises of UA if they offered us some of what they put him in. It's 🔥.

I actually like the look of most of the UA stuff, just didn't love the sizing issues I have had on the consumer end plus was rooting for Nike just because it seems like that's what the kids prefer in terms of aesthetic and performance.

It’s kinda funny that if money is the root of all evil, and because of Chinese labor conditions, ND is adamant about not switching to Nike, yet they go with money. Just kind of ironic. Hate to say it but it is all about money.

Which means if Nike would have offered more we would have went with them. But they didn't.

I’m going to withhold full judgement until we get clarification on whether or not there actually is an NIL piece included. If so, then I’m okay with it. Also, it’s the biggest deal in all of college sports, which does say something.
Every deal ND signs should be the biggest. Why should ND receive less than similarly situated schools who signed deals in prior years?

I'm really confused by Dellenger's reporting.

He specifically states that ND's deal is would be the largest apparel deal in college athletics, and specifically details that it exceeds Texas, Ohio State, etc. all of which have deals averaging 8-10 mil per year.

But that math doesn't add up. Ohio State signed a 15 year extension for $252 million. 252 million divided by 15 is about 17 million per year. That's about double what Dellenger is reporting.

I would imagine a decent chunk of that 17 per is not in $$. They do in fact have to equip the teams.

That's true, but it appears Dellenger is alluding to the 10+ million figure for ND to include both cash and gear.

Here was an Elevenwarriors article that breaks down the pOSU contract and compares parts of it to Texas and Michigan. All three had the annual payments in the form of cash and gear close to the 10 million figure.

In addition there were upfront cash payments and a long list of other compensation for various items. pOSU got 41 million for “use outside of athletics”. Whatever that means.

Link

Who knows what other details of the ND contract will look like.

41million for use outside of athletics i would imagine includes stocking your stores, NIL, marketing.

Yes, that seems to be a crafty way by Dellenger (and really ND because the article yesterday is clearly informed by what ND wants to be publicized) of counting some money but not all the money present in other apparel deals.

For example, if Notre Dame's deal is structured similar to Ohio State's deal then the annual payments would look something like this:

$2.8 million cash
$3.7 million apparel
$3.5 million other (scholarships, grants, internships, more gear, etc.)

Dellenger's article implies Notre Dame will be getting paid more in cash/gear than any other school which can only be true if the 'other' parts of the contract present in these deals doesn't exist, which I think is impossible.

I wonder to what extent this is driven by Notre Dame refusing to take a deal with Nike that’s smaller than OSU or Michigan.

It was the same way 10 years ago when we first signed the deal. That's just how these renewals work for the top school brands in this sport. The market gets reset until the next top program renews, similar to QBs in the NFL.

Deshaun Watson was the highest paid QB a mere couple years ago and now he's like 8th. It's all cyclical. There needs to be a differentiator, like NIL, not just "we have the highest apparel deal until Bama, Georgia, scUM, USC, etc. renewal their apparel deals.

So that’s the reason (along w/ money)? UA aren’t made in Italy so are the labor conditions really that different wherever their manufacturing plants are than China? I’m pretty sure they’re still made somewhere in Asia.

Typical of ND of late. TAKE something less than ideal, but will spin it in an absurd direction that fools nobody. I get saving face but this is just pathetic.
To be fair, most people won’t pay anywhere near the detailed attention to it that we are and will simply notice a headline that says “Notre Dame signs biggest apparel contract ever” or whatnot. And thus be “fooled,” as you put it. They know what they’re doing.

I like Under Armor. Most of my polos, golf shorts/pants, and shorts are UA. I think it’s all very comfortable and affordable. Don’t get the hate about the clothing itself.

I don’t recall where I read that. Probably speculation. My UA shirts say Malaysia, so yeah Southeast Asia, so you’re probably right no different.

I have some throwback UA ND tees I got in 2020, I think are awesome. Also like their golf stuff

Not terribly surprising.

I'll get a shirt with a shamrock with the word "FREEDOM" under it when it goes on clearance at Fanatics.
