Do you have to enter the transfer portal if you're a walkon?

Without knowing much - I still don't think other teams can freely contact you just because you aren't on scholarship. This is probably just red tape paperwork so he can talk to a few schools.

To see if you can go somewhere where you can see the field and get your tuition paid for? Really, it almost makes no sense for walk ons to not enter the portal, even if just to see if any schools are interested. Its not like they have to worry about losing their scholarship.

Especially if you are getting run at a place like ND. Could get some G5 or FCS love.

What’s concerning to me is we aren’t hearing about the staff bringing in any transfers for visits we are sitting at 82 guys now we have been lucky the last year or 2 with injuries minus Buchner last year. What if the injury bug strikes us this year?

Yep. There's really no downside. If you're good enough to get on the field at Notre Dame you might get a scholarship - or a starting job - somewhere smaller. And you don't have to actually leave. You're not going to get recruited over.

I’m not worried about DB, I think we will find adequate safety play to go with great CB play.

I think we needed to find a way to pay up for a quality WR in the spring and missed the boat there. If you get two bad injuries at WR we are in a LOT of trouble.

A huge percentage of portal entrants are walk-ons looking for a scholarship (or pressuring their current school to offer one up to keep them).

This SI article is from a few years ago, but still rings true. 60% of players in portal had not found a landing spot and around the same number entered from a P5 school had to go down a level. As stated, the grass is not always greener.

Get ready for a lot of “they couldn’t find a good fit” from ND media regarding every position they should go to the portal to fill.

Visits can go on for a while. The staff doesn’t need to rush to get visitors in. They are likely talking to players. Freeman, Golden and Leary all talked about the need to look into the portal for another safety. They will make it happen.

Today is the last day to enter the portal but players can commit after anytime they so wish. Likely ND will add someone before the summer semester starts, in mid-June.

I wouldn’t be too worried about filling the roster. Like another poster pointed out, 60% of transfers never find a home. I would however be worried with what we fill the roster with.

Correct, grad transfers don’t have to enter their name in the portal but they can if they want to use it to shop themselves.
