In looking closer at the S who appeared in the portal today, they look like they weren't excelling and getting playing time at their former teams... I like RJ Moten (MI) and Ja'Qurious Conley (NC) as our best options right now.

if everyone stays healthy I like Mickey at Nickel and Harper/Watts at safety.

Yep. Carries ebbed and flowed as the season went along but Estime/Diggs was basically a 50-50 split. A pretty ideal scenario.
So unless they made clear either that Estime was going to be a bellcow this year, or that Payne/Price were going to eat at Diggs' expense, it's either Diggs wanting to be a clear RB1, or off-field factors like homesick/grades/poor fit. I would guess it's probably a combination of those latter two factors.
Maybe Diggs leaving is an indication of the level that Jadarian is at. He did not take part in spring practice, but maybe he is further along than we know, and given that, Diggs saw the writing on the wall.

I would take RJ Moten for sure.

Further, Notre Dame's 2022 offense had to run the ball to be effective because WR and QB were huge weaknesses so that meant lots of carries for Diggs and Estime.

Now that there is a new OC, a confident gunslinger at QB and lots of emerging toys in the WR group, the Run/Pass split is likely to skew to much more to Pass plays. So fewer run plays in total and carries shared with more RBs than just Estime probably made it an easy decision for Diggs.

I agree that you don’t want too many carries but you probably don’t want to be 2nd or 3rd in a rotation if being drafted is your goal.
3rd i agree, but plenty of secondary backs have made it to the nfl

This is very good point. I don't know if Logan was thinking that deep on the issue but very true. Hartman is going to throw the ball more and throw it more effectively than Pyne. So, that likely plays a role in RB touches.

He’s a close-to-the-line strong safety. I’d take a look at him and a more rangey cover safety out of the portal.
Yea I agree on Moten, he's a big dude - almost identical to Prince Kollie size-wise. Probably a good piece for someone in dime/nickel as a OLB/S - but I don't know if they're looking for that. Also, a poor tackler from what the #'s say.

A part of the RB role under the new offense could be catching short passes in space for YACs, but I don't recall how much Diggs and Estime did that effectively last year? If Diggs not so much, maybe he was taking that into account as well. Did he have some long catch and runs over the past 2 years? I honestly can't recall.

Oh sheet, I guess Diggs did have that 75-yd catch and run in the Bowl Game against SC

Chris O'Leary recent twitter follows:
  • Antonio Carter, DB out of Rhode Island
  • Demetrius Hill, DB out of FIU
  • Simeon Harris, DB from Colorado
Yeah, I was just thinking I would prefer someone that is from a smaller school that has outperformed everyone over someone that got beat out for playing time and transferred.

I’m not worried about DB, I think we will find adequate safety play to go with great CB play.

I think we needed to find a way to pay up for a quality WR in the spring and missed the boat there. If you get two bad injuries at WR we are in a LOT of trouble.

Antonio Carter had some real nice stats this past year, has the build of a good safety. Should be able to grad transfer with two years of eligibility.

All these transfers make me respect Chris Tyree more. Dude has stuck it out and never ran away from competition
This 100%, he was initially a 5*, hasn't lived up to his recruiting hype, and could've easily transferred. The move to slot will be a blessing for him. He will catch the passes Styles couldn't catch, possibly get some carries Diggs would've gotten. Glad Tyree has stuck it out!
