Really, I think it would be advantageous if the staff and the recruiting department would take the time to identify prospective student athletes who possess the requisite character and academic traits that give them the best shot at both passing through admissions and continuing with academic success once enrolled. Don’t bother recruiting anyone that isn’t low-hanging fruit. The safe plays. Real Freeman Guys. RFGs, we could call them.

Anything else is just preposterous.

Makes sense but this is the very reason why Holtz won less games after his Natty. The admin had tighter admissions standards. Everything has consequences and academic admissions is just another hard filter against securing every possible blue chip recruit.

Its a trainwreck because Michigan is not an SEC team. This will be used against ND recruiting on the trail.

ND has always hamstrung the football program with academic restrictions in recruiting. Now they're taking it to the next level of applying it to signees. Can't wait til they boot Freeman because he didn't take 7 years of French.

For me, this is worse than the whole “What did Davonte do” inside joke. I really just want to know what the hell happened, knowing full well I probably never will.
Part of me does too, but the finality of it isn't going to change. He's not going to be on the team.

Didn't it kind of happen with Tee Shepard too?
I guess Tee enrolled, but he was an EE who should've still been in high school and IIRC didn't even make it to midterms. I feel like the word was he was given some sort of conditional admission and it was pretty clear from the start he wasn't going to meet the conditions. So it's effectively the same thing.

Yep. It's the Michigan part of this that burns me, TBH.
It sucks he's not coming to ND but if the admissions hadn't worked out and he landed at some directional school or a low-standards SEC program, well, that happens sometimes. But Michigan, loudly and proudly, Does Things The Right Way, just like we do (I know, I know). And if we send him packing but he immediately signs an LOI with them, it makes Notre Dame look like the problem here. And yeah, then with our luck he'll be a three-year starter there.

If I were the coaches I'd move Jaiden Ausberry to Safety he is the right size and we have plenty of depth at LB. He can always move to LB when he gets bigger

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC Tee showed up and was sent home immediately. He was never officially admitted. Seems there might have been some thought that if he showed up they would go ahead and admit him?

This feels so long ago and the details are fuzzy, but I thought it had something to do with ND not accommodating him and his hearing impediment

I don't know if he was officially admitted or conditionally admitted or taking classes at Holy Cross maybe even but I remember he stuck around long enough to film himself doing some sort of cone drill in the locker room and everyone was very excited about his agility. And he probably made it to Signing Day b/c we were all taken by surprise when his "package deal" buddy Deontay Greenberry flipped to Houston.
But pretty sure he was gone by spring practice.
What a time to be alive, that was.

This is exactly the issue. It’s one thing for someone not to get into school, it’s another for them to seamlessly get into another regional university with similar rankings. Not really any different than him ending up at UVA, etc. after not getting in to ND… it implies that ND is the one acting a fool.

To the Tee Shep thing others are talking about - the issue was that ND was provided falsified transcripts. Someone (Lane Kiffin?) snitched on him and that was that. With correct transcripts he wasn’t qualified for ND. Just say no to Fresno.

Does Michigan apply admissions standards to athletes? Duke is "ranked" higher than ND. There are no admissions standards for Duke BB players, as far as I know. It has nothing to do with rankings.

That said, ND admissions can come across as arrogant and delusional. I just don't know the circumstances of this specific case.

I think that’s a big part of the issue. Duke can run the kind of basketball program it does without impacting their academic standing… why is ND not taking a “borderline” kid they sent an offer to? Why are other major programs willing to take him? But we don’t have all the details.

TBH, I'm sure it's more on the kid than ND. Especially when he knows there's a much easier option on the table. Kid made a snap decision and I honestly can't say I wouldn't do the same thing if I was an 18 year old stud athlete

Are you saying he asked to get out of his NLI so he could go to an easier school? Or that he didn’t complete certain requirements to get in?

Why would ND let a kid out of NLI so easily. Methinks it's a bit of both. Probably told him certain credits didn't cover and he needed to do some extra work over the summer. Probably made him feel as though ND was going to be a pain because of that and probably knew other programs might have interest. Then he bitched and they let him out. Wonder if they knew Michigan was going to be where he was going to land within 72 hours. Just another ND shitshow. Not as bad as the Andy Luck issue but still stupid as fuck. The kid should be on this team.

I hope Freeman is pushing hard against this administration behind the seasons. I think he might need to become a big prick once in a while.
