His film watching on punts is unbelievable. He is a good coach but his return teams still need some work and we need a kick that kick from 30 yards. 6-10 from 30 plus isn't good enough.
How can he be blamed for a kicker missing a field goal? Blocking schemes, yes.

Anybody know what the record for most punt blocks in a season is?

Thanks
Was that in an era of more punt blocks or some such?
I am not sure. I just happened to know it as I was having this discussion with someone yesterday and we looked it up.

“Honored to be awarded by a great group of previous winners! Our success is a result of the buy in from our great staff and players. Everything starts at the top. Fortunate to have a head coach who believes in the importance of ST and is actively involved in meetings and drills.

Thank you to our great coaching staff who all have roles on ST units. They do an incredible job helping set the standard and expectations for ST within their meeting rooms.

It is a ton of fun to be the Special Teams Coordinator @ndfootball working with a group of really smart, resilient and hard working players. Our starters and best players all have roles on ST. Thank you for doing extra meetings and walk throughs to help change the game.

The transition in year 1 was incredibly smooth because of the immediate buy in from our leaders and seniors. We have a long list of experienced and talented players that made a huge impact on ST. Special thank you to our ST captain @____bb52 who led the way from day 1!

Special shout out to the best young ST coach in the country @CoachJS50ND and to our scout/look team coaches @JohnnyAylwardND and @JLaurinaitis55!

Thought he was transferring.
I have a strong feeling someone is going to go after him still. The Carousel hasn't even really begun yet and the NFL is still in playoff mode. I would be thrilled if we keep him another year.

Easily one of the best assistant coaching jobs of recent memory. Having a guy like this really helps engage a portion of the roster that might not be 2 deep guys.

Yea, that’s part of the buy-in right. Get the starters jacked up for ST’s and then the 3 and 4 deep dudes want to do it when their number is called.

Not even just the deeper parts of the roster. Check out this breakdown of the game punt. Love to see these guys engaged and playing hard

That was perfect timing on the fake, awesome play. This team is getting more fun to watch.

This man swung a few games in our favor when offense and/or defense wasn't able to get it done by themselves. I hope we can keep him for a few years because great special teams are really fun to watch.

Mason is Freeman’s guy. There were together at Kent St and Purdue before UC
Do you think freeman would promote him to a higher position at some point? Idk his credentials so idk if he would have offensive or defensive experience but just wondering to keep him at ND if they promote him to another position or if they had a title to his name like assistant coach or something

Before a promotion I'd like to see what he can do in year 2 and see if he can keep our making our special teams special.

If in-coming recruits can make big $$

Freeman and ND need to give Mason a nice raise.

I don’t see him leaving for a lateral move unless it was the NFL which would be a step up in its own right.

He helped coach D in some capacity at UC and was Director of Recruiting. I think he already helps to some extent here on D. I wouldn’t rule out position coach if he wanted additional responsibilities at all.

Maybe safeties if it opened up or LBs considering Freeman will be here anyways.

Hope (obviously) that whatever position he might coach, he keeps Special Teams. Effective guys there are VERY rare.

I noticed with interest his use of the phrase "Self Scout." He has now made opponents miserable. Every opposing ST coordinator now will be tearing all the film apart saying "What EXACTLY are these guys doing?" So now it's like the old joke: Yes, you know that I know, but I know you know that i know even though you probably know that I know that you know that I know .... So he's self scouting and thinking: This ST guy is smart enough to pick up on this detail. How will he adjust? If he does this, then he'll bend himself out of shape in this other place. We then can show him this, but shift into this , etc ... I'm very much looking forward to this ST punt blocking game next season.

Looks like Mason coached DL as a grad assistant at Bluffton State about ten years ago. Fire Al Washington!

Maybe it’s just me, but he gives off Diaco vibes. Just not as handsome

Mason seems like wild energy waiting to erupt. ... and does regularly.
Diaco was the opposite, almost autistic in his conversational strangeness.
I recall him accepting the assistant coach of the year award with the other candidates sitting around.
As he went into his somewhat bizarre speech, those guys were glancing at one another like "who in the he!l is this nut?"

also, Diaco coached like he was building a mechanical clock.
Mason seems to coach like he's creating a semi-crazed but organized jailbreak.

Who is that Juco kid from Palomar who posted on the thread? Don't know if ND would take a Juco transfer, but I love the aggressiveness of the kid replying he wanted to come to ND to be a part of that special team's success.

Diaco was our DC during our undefeated season. He lost the touch later but I was impressed by his D’s the first few years.
