I've never quite understood why Botelho doesn't play LB. He doesn't really seem long enough to be a great outside pass rusher, and he hits like a truck. No good in pass coverage, I guess?
Based on what I've read and heard he just plays 200 mph with no real direction, which is no good for a LB that needs to make the right reads and fits. (So does Marist though and he's out there). But being a pass rusher fits Botelho's abilities because he can pin his ears back and just attack.

Pushing in all of my chips here. Truly have not been excited about this program like I am now in a very long time, and that is owed to Marcus Freeman. He's what this program needs right now at the best possible time.

Let's go.
Agreed 100%. There are still going to be plenty of naysayers who will continue to say "MARSHALL and STANFORD" but I think if you reflect on how this program responded despite those hiccups, you can see the belief from the players in this coach. The Irish could've folded (and many, including me, thought they would) after that 0-2 start but instead they ripped off a 9-2 record the rest of the way with several top 20 wins. A remarkable recovery after a dreadful start.

The future is extremely bright. Once these next couple of recruiting classes come to fruition on the field, the sky is the limit.

Agree, Freeman is the difference maker. I haven't felt this good under a 1st year coach since at least Weis and that turned out to be a lot of smoke and mirrors in ways. Freeman isn't just focused on one side of the ball like him, he's recruiting across the board well. He's saying all the right things, he seems bought in to the school and culture.

Agreed, Weis was an OC in charge of running a program and quite frankly didn't put in enough effort to improve the other side of the ball. His lackluster defenses were ultimately his downfall. He would've been incredible in the OC role at ND with a better HC.

Freeman is completely bought in his enthusiasm is incredible.

Weis had a terrible S&C program. That was his downfall. Look at how skinny those guys were.

Still not sure Weis wouldn’t have been great at ND if he had taken care of the defensive side of the ball with a good DC.Good post

Initially, Charlie Strong was going to come in as Charlie’s DC but Meyer talked him into staying at Florida. I wonder how things might have turned out differently if he did come to ND.

Comments on their physical appearances aside, and some of the other odd takes above, why would it be strange for previous coaches to be brought up on our current head coaches thread? That doesn't seem like much of a stretch to me, for comparison sake, or being thankful where we are today as a program compared to 20 years ago.

Are we going to start handing out badges for posters to start strictly policing threads? Is it time to start listing out very strict topics of conversation for each thread? Gimme a break.

I guess it doesn't matter....

Ruben Mendoza had players under Weis gassed in the fourth quarter and completely worthless in November because they were not properly conditioned. I think it wound up being Weis' ultimate downfall. Letting Sam Young eat as many pizzas as he wanted and maxing out in the weight room didn't do anyone any good. It was a slow, dumpy team especially defensively.

Weis never should have hired Tenuta. He should have stuck with Corwin Brown as DC and left him alone. Too many chefs in the kitchen. Davie's offenses had no real identity and it cost him, Weis' defenses had no real identity and it cost him.

Marcus Freeman is going to do better than both because it is ultimately hard to do worse than those two did and they both had winning records during their tenures if you can believe that.
