I know this, you know this. Problem is the elite players want theirs up front. They don't want to wait.

Totally get this for EE, true freshman, and undergrad transfers but I’d think the calculus might be a little different for a grad transfer trying to get more eyeballs on his game. You’re right though I’m probably optimistic :(

Exactly. Plus waiting to "get theirs" makes no financial sense in current market conditions. Money now is worth much much more than money later not even factoring for inflation which makes the argument even more one-sided.

What makes anyone think that ND, a school that doesn't play the same NIL game the majority of CFB plays, is going to get a difference maker whose beggar than Buchner next season?

Tyree signed a NIL deal with NBC. Ton of offensive talent returning. It’s not inconceivable.

McNamara is by no means a great QB, but he's better than Pyne. He's not #1 on my list of grad transfer QB's but I'd take him if he's the best we can get. Hudson Card is still my #1.

Is Card in the portal? Didn’t see his name.

College football and ND have been so weird this year I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Tommy Rees is petitioning for another year of eligibility.

I think it's safe to say that next year's starting QB isn't on the current roster. Hopefully some more quality QB's hit the portal so our new OC, whoever that may be, can work wonders with him next season.

I do not agree. I think it's perfectly possible that Buchner or Pyne wins the job over a transfer QB. Unless we're tampering with Devin Leary/Drake Maye/Riley Leonard/AJ Swann right now lol.

That's terrifying and would likely mean that the grad transfer QB we bring in isn't all that good.

It means we're unwilling to promise a transfer QB the starting job, and either an experienced (Pyne) or talented (Buchner) QB who's already here beats him out.

If some knockout obvious QB1 wants to come here, then great, it won't be a problem. But most transfers are transferring because they aren't deemed good enough to start where they're at. Not sure why we should promise one of those guys a starting job at Notre Dame. If they're cool with that and want to compete for the job, great, good luck and God bless, but it also means one of the QBs at Notre Dame currently might beat them out. We should get out of the business of guaranteeing QB1 status to anyone. You have to earn that.

Not really. Buchner has high level physical ability with his legs and his arm, and I know that the Stanford game was awful from Pyne, but the UNC and BYU games also happened too. I think it's certainly possible that Buchner comes back from his injury, wins the job and tears it up. But hey, if we're tampering for Drake Maye, Devin Leary, AJ Swann, Max Duggan, or Riley Leonard, that's also fine by me.

If McKee doesn’t get the NFL feedback he’s looking for, they should pray to God he graduates in 3 and either doesn’t get into Stanford grad school or is willing to leave. There’s your “he doesn’t count transfer” sent from Heaven.

I think Duggan could still end up transferring. Though I’d caution you’re about to continue to see his performance dip just as a proper expectation.

Tyler Van Dyke is back to being the starter but he’d be another I’d be curious if he doesn’t get the NFL feedback he wants how rocky that relationship is. Gattis is worse than what people think Rees is.

I feel like the only chance ND would have to get Duggan into the portal would be to hire Garret Riley as OC (which I'd be totally fine with). TVD would be interesting for sure.

I’m not so sure he’ll need to be coaxed that much into the portal. Duggan is realistically not the guy we saw week 1 - 6. Colorado, KU, SMU, OU. Legitimately awful defenses. You’re gonna hear Chandler Morris talk again be it during the year or entering next year. Heck Riley’s big bro recruited him. Texas football circles type kid.

Duggan is a good college QB, but he’s not a 70% completion, 400 yards, 4 TDs week in and week out as we continue the season.

Does TCU’s remaining schedule bring you to this conclusion, because it isn’t stellar. Oklahoma State was probably the best team they will face all year and he played pretty well. He was responsible for 3 touchdowns and almost 350 yards from scrimmage.

I, myself, would be more likely to think he has similar success for the remainder of the season.

KSU, Texas, Baylor and Iowa State all have real defenses. Oklahoma St’s D is better than KU, OU etc but not the best he will face this year.

He played pretty well as I said he’s a good college QB. It was also a season low in completion %, yards per attempt and TDs in a game that went to OT. He came back down to what I’d say would be a proper expectation.

I’d be more than fine, I’d be elated. Put Duggan on next yr’s team, they can play with anyone on their schedule, including OSU & USC

Bachmeier regressed big time over the years. McNamara would be fine if it’s bw him and ND’s current QBs

In defense of Bachmeier, the whole Boise offense was average last year. They didn't have a running game and only had one true playmaker on offense in Khalil Shakir. His stats were not bad, all things considered. I haven't watched any true game film of his, so my concern would be how is his arm talent? Can he read the field? Can he hit his receivers in stride or does he make them adjust?...etc

I would be happy with any QB that can throw a nice, accurate deep ball that offers some mobility. That alone would change this offense (QB play) so much.
